The other nice thing is the interest rate - which wiil be very close to prime. Depending on the lender, the rate can range from half a point to 1.75 points over prime. Even so, the rate is most likely the iowest around - ' far better than for most other bans. It ail sounds good so far. But there are two negatives to these loans: set- up costs and uncertain interest rate. As far as set-up costs go, count on it costing you severai -hundred dollars (the range is from $225 to $ 1,000). The exhibition of works is an overview of the artist's workefor the. last four years. ,A realist, Lander'spaintings are often domestie and noveiistic, stories in which objects, flot people are the "characters. " His works might include a vase of fiowers or a stack of plates, chosen to create a narrative which interact like actors in a play. These, ren- dered in his precise technique, give his paintings ciarity and joy. His work is a view from an ideaiized daiiy life. These paintings combine the formai elements of space with a deft handiing of lights and darks executed-in a precise watercoior technique. The curator of the exhibition, Joan Murray, notes severai similarities to Matisse's paintings from the south of France in the 1920s. Of ten working with photography, Lander will take severai siides of a stili life set-up, then edit until every object is viewed to its best advantage. The subjects are painted in fiat planes of color -without shadow or modulation. A graduate of O'Neill Collegiate, Oshawa, Lander's first formai training was. at the Banff School of Fine Arts in 1968. He then enroiled in the fine art program at York University. His famous fiowers and vase prints have become very popular and now seem to be everywhere. Since 1981, Lander has iived and worked in New York. In addition to ieaving behind the silkscreen technique he began to leave behind the fiat basic aesthetic of silkscreen and moved toward three. dimensionai space. Hé felt that he had exhausted the flower and vase theme. It took until the winter of 1983-84 to. complete the first new still life paintings. The titie of the show refers to the change in his work sincehis move. He is now painting in watercoior, a technique he taught himseif and deveioped in New York.
