S"We couldn't figure out why it was so tasty," says Linda Grieco. But they learned that mesquite wood provided that fine flavor and decided to try the idea in Canada. "'We tbougt we had potential and we were rigbt,"l says Grieco who, operating Mesquite Wood Canada Ine. from her Bradley St. home, directs orders for mesquite wood DOWNTOWN WHITBY Business Improvement Area 105 Mary St. W., Whitby 666-4189 .....WITH MERCANTILE CUSTOM SPORTS WEAR DUNOASST .2 DUNLOP ST GiJrT T 321 BROCK STREET, S., WHITBY 668o3468 STORE MON-WED THURS-FRI SAT HOURS 9-6 9-8 9-5:30 LJI CL.~QULITY* SERVICE * STYLE * SELECTION grills to the kitchens of Keg Restaurants Çanada and others across Canada*tnd in parts of the Next year, the grills, wbich corne insizesof36, 42andý54 inches, will go to iBothercountries.. "Any business is bard until you find which buttons to pusb, " she says. 1The grills, described by Grieco as a solid fuel appliance but with heavier gauge steel, are ail made in Texas from wbere the mesquite woodlogsalsocome. "We seil the complete grill to restaurants," says Grieco. "Once tbey purchase the grill, we supply Budget them with the logs."9 The grills, once arrived from Texas, are stored in a warehouse at P.R , Engineering in Oshawa where FrankGriecowoikë.. One had the feeling it bad ail been said and done before. Having introduced phaseI of tax reforrn as a White Paper in June, 1987, followed by the implemen- tation package in December, Mr. Wilson was left witb precious little new or novel to offer. Witb an elec- tion on the horizon, the government seems ready to go to the people on the strength of its economic perfor- mhance. Mr. Wilson points* to Canada's number one position among world economies in growtb,. relatively low interest rates, bigb employment, record housing starts, and t he Canada-U.S. free tra.de agreement' as reasons why Canadians sbould be able to look forwardwith confidence. Despite brave words about responïsible fiscal management, those looking for a renewed atta.ck on the deficit'will be sadly disap- pointed. At best the deficit will decrease by less than $1 billion over the next two fiscal periods.-, And wbat about federal sales tax reform? Wile tbere bas apparently been some progress in negotiations witb-the provinces to develop an in- tegrated national sales tax, there is still no indication of when this seconji phade of tax reform willibe p ut. in place.' Meanwblle, there îwill be furtber sigifUicant changes to the present archaic system, prirnarily to stemn the ersion of the tax base tbrougb wbat the government per- ceives to be tax avoidance mécbanisms. The new rules -for computing the tax base are ar- bitrary and in some cases inequitable and only serve to bigbligbt the absolute necessity of ixnplementing comprehensive sales tax reform as soon as possible. The trend to tighten rules to coun- ter corporate tax minixnization con- tinues. Tbe associated corporation rules wil be amepded to ensure that a group of corporations will not gain multiple access to the small business tax rate and other benefits. A one, cent per litre increase in tbe excise tax.on gasoline is tbe major source of revenue in the budget and that will be used to finance the national Étrategy on child care wbicb was previously announced. Restrictions placed on wbolesale licensees will result in a one-time revenue gain from increased sales tax. The budget did'not include draft legislation for reformof the taxation of pensions' and RRSPs. This. legisiation is expected in late Marcb. dealer for CLASSIC ACCOUNTING SOFTWARE fro)m $300.00 INSTALLATION AND 'ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE I i ...pride in the pas t, designs for the future. - ---- -------
