"So far it's been incredible," says -Donnan, presidento Donnan Moters'. Suzuki, about the response since the dersip began Feb. 1. With sales already of about 35 cars, 'It's a little botter than our study had showed," ho says. Before establlshing, Donnan and, Bannister, vice president,. had a feasibility- study carried out te find out what the consumer of Ajax*-Pickering' and area wanted in a car. Donnan says the consumer wanted.a second car, new, but foi the price of a ,used car,.ý for commuting. :Throw 'in, gooc mileage, and thoy settled upon the Suzuki,. "Jt's probably the besi commuter car .pn the market," sa ys Donnan of the GM-, Suzukd product, that is now made* in Japan but wil next year b produced in Ingersoll. 'They came inte their owr last year," 'ho says of the car, sester te the GM Sprint and Firefly. The ýou lbath t reatmen t Rust is a major contributor to the ,premature domise of many a fine -_automobile. The use of road sait îhas increased substantlally oVer Sthe last decade in the colder reglons Sof the country, leadlng to prema- r ture rust problems for ail vehicles. P In responise to'the dramatie in- crease I the use of road sait, car owners, are now going to great iengtbs to rustproof their vehicies. While such procedures cannot guarantee that a car will nover rust, it's widely accepted that rust- proofing,. combined with proper owner car shouldkeep a car bodyi good condition and minimize the risk of corrosion. But, there are certain high risk areas that can't seem to get enough protection. A number *of automobil .e manufacturers have conducted studies on the effect of corrosion on car bodies to determine which components rust first and quickest. The results were fairly predic- table: the undercarriage and wheel wells presented the highest risk. Because these'areas are in direct contact wi th, corrosive -elements,, and -run the.highest probabiiity of rusting, they deserve special atten- tion. -The solution is called an oul bath treatment. It's a simple procedtzre that involves spraying the under- side of a car with a powerful rust inhibitor. The treatment is calied a- "bath" because, in effect, every nut and boit is soaked by this comi- pound. The process is specificially designed for undercarriages and can significantly reduce the risk of damage through rust and corrsion. One of the best oil bath treatmen- ts is offered by a specialized ser- vice chai called Perma-Shie cen- tres. The protective compound they use contains a graphite lubricant, whlch allows the rust inhibitor to flow smoothly, and coat the entire undercarriage evenly. The Permfia- Shine spray bonids, immediately, eliminatig drlps and leaks. Until recently, most oil bath customers were not city dwellers. The reason for this is that the con- dition of rural roads made special undercarriage care nocessary. Now with the icreased use of road sait, city dweilers are finding this service ivaluable as well. Palm oil as fu-el Canadian consumers are used to seeing palm ou listed as 'an ingredient in many baked good's. Malaysian consumers may soon be puttinig it itheir tanks as wêll. Malaysia lis the Wtrld,È larest producer of 1palmr oilt.' To use up the excess, of a few years good har- vests, the country set out in 1982 to turn it ito diesel- fuel. During the past two years, .the Palm, 011 Research Institute of Malaysia (PORIM) has found that palm diesel (methyl esters) works as well as petroleum fuels in machinery and vehicles. If tests continue to show that it burns cleanly and efficientiy, many of the world's major.makers of diesel engines including Volvo, Toyota and Daimiler Benz, will soon extend their enïgine warranties to palm' ,diesel fuels. stEelart sugmý Markham, -Ontario (416) 4 74-1678.
