Its getting there," says Sam- mut, who' is only 22, about bis designs and the response from clients. A graduate of Sheridan College two years ago, Samnmut's work was first promoted by a company until he decided to start bis own business. I neyer wanted te work for anybody else," says the native of Malta,» where he 'was a model beforeý becoming interested in fashion design.. He moved te Canada five years ago. He describes bis "Exclusive Designs" as more of a "freelance"i occupation carried . out in bis Whitby home. He is involved-in 12 te 15 fasbion shows a year, either as participant or organizer, andhe displays a new lime for the spring and fali seasons. He then receives orders from' viewers Or friends. Since then hé has moved, toward "high: fashion," yet not main- streain. "My stuif is very simple, but the approach *is flot," ie says, noting that experimentation and varia- tion are important in his art. 'My stuif will be one of a, kind, even in the future. "I'T neyer buy anything off the rack. And there's lots of People out there who hate shopping in stores." He admires the-"simplicity and interpretation" of Yves St. Laur- ent and, the avant garde haute couture of Christian Larux.
