SA n- o ltrnV ViE iPRES. WEDfN1SDAY. APRIL 20p 1988 NI@euwendyk 'pleased' with banner rookie season .IBy Mike Jolmston Not since Mike Bossy of the New ýYork Islanders scored 53 goals in 1977, is first NHL season, has a rookie been so dominant in scoring. Until this year. Whitby's Joe Nieuwendyk net- ted 51 goals with the Calgary Flames this year, leadirig al rookies in scoring. If there ever was anything close to a sure thing, it would be Nieuwendyk getting the nod as the NHL's best rookie award, the Calder Trophy. "I'm not thinking about that right now," said Nieuwendyk Monday, as bis team prepared to meet the Edmonton Oflers in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Nieuwendyk said only that he was "pleased" with bis rookie year. Besides "the 51 goals, the center added 41 assists te amass 92 points., "im disappointed I didn't get the record (Bossy's 53 goals in a rookie year) but tbere was a lot of pressure on me." Nieuwendyk went into a mini-slump the last seven gaines of the season, whicb be attributed te tbe pressure and reading about the record "every day' in the Calgary papers. But tbat is ail bebîmd bim now, and Nieuwendyk and bis team are now preparing for the Oilers. "t is going to be a big series. Our team is bealthy, and if I amn mot scoring, players like Lanny MacDonald and Tim Hunter are. "They wiil probably be keying on our powerplay and if they watch me there are other goalscoring options. open," said Nieuwendyk. .He says the Flames will be attempting te contain the Qulers' two top scorers, Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier, wbile at the same time staying away from penalties. After finisbing first in the Smytbe division, the* Plames advanced past the first round by defeating the Los Angeles Kings four games to one in a best-of -seven series. Calgary wrapped that series up a week ago and have now had a week off te prepare for Edmonton. Nieuwendyk said the week off will not affect the team's intensity . "No, we're not rusty. We have been practising bard and it bas given us a cbance to beal some injuries," said M1euwendyk, also a former 1acrosge star in Whitby. He notes that high, scoring winger Mike Éullard is now."100 per cent" folloWing a kneëe injury that kept him ýout of the lime-up for three weeks. But the Plames will be without Joe Mullen for at least the first two games of the Edmonton series due to an injury. Asked to recall some highlights from bis first NHL season, Nieuwendyk romembered bis 5tb goal in Calgary in a game against Buffalo. He also men- tioned bis two fouri-goal games. "in not disappoeited at ail. I didn't know wbat to expect," said Nieuwendyk, about bis first season in the NHL, following bis years as one of the top U.S. college players. By BRENDAN REINBOLDT The Whitby senior basebail teain is preparing for the upcoming '88 season, with 10 of last year's teain members returning to this year's squad. Whitby will again this year play in the B division along with teains froin Oshawa, Peterborough and Port Hope.* Last year's senior teain advanced to the B finals with a 17-11 record, losing to Port Hope in the finals. "The regular season was real -~close ast year, it was only a win separating first froin second," said Howie Moore, a pitcher for the Whitby teain. Whitby expects at least three of last year's graduating juniors to try out for the seniors this season. "The pitching and defence will be strong points this year, just as last year. We're hoping the younger players can pick up on the offence and speed, " said Moore. Moore has plenty of confidence for this year's regular season and ex- pects the tearn to perfonm more ef- fectively in this year's tournaments. "Last year*we would make thej finals or consolation rounds in tour- naments and then lose it ahl," said Moore. "You can't win any money that way." The team's first gaine of the,' season is against Oshawa on May 7 and, their first home gaine will be played on May 10oagainst Oshawa. Tryouts began April 16, and will be held every Saturday and Sunday at Iroquois Park at 10 a.m. for the next three weekends. WHITBY'S senior basebali team prepares for the up- coming season, which will begin May 7 against Oshawa.
