Certainly it's their most profitable day of the entire year. Yes it's a very good day for florists, candy makers and restaurants. For the rest of us it's a day on which we're supposed to honor our Mom. If we're mothers ourselves, it's our day too, and of course for those of us who have mothers-in-law, it's their day also. How all this honoring of at least three women is supposed to be orchestrated al on one day is beyond me. As mothers we've been conditioned by commercial ad- vertisers that this is our day, our day to relax, to enjoy our family, to revel in the glory and wonder of motherhood. Ac- cording to the ads, some of us will enjoy an âfternoon or' evening of fine dining, others will dig into some take-out chicken, still others will be presented with a posy of flowers and maybe even a box of chocolates. Only so much honoring can go on in one day!1 The truth of the matter is that many of us spend some stressful moments trying to figure out how we can fit in visits with our mothers and our mothers-in-law at times they deem convenient and in a way that they see fitting. At the same time we can's help wondering at what stage of being a mother do we get to do what Mother's Day is sup- posed to be for, namely, doing whatever we walt to. I think Mother's Day is a pain. It is commercialism at its most obscene. If Mother's Day is the only tirne a mother is paid special attention to by her children, something is awfullyyrong. My mother certainly doesn't need Mother's Day to know how much she is loved and thought of by her children. Every year she says the same thing about the day -"It's just another day to me. " But every year I'm caught up with the commercial hype, and just in case, for safety's sake, I try and do something special for her. I know, though, that the something special would mean more to her on a day that wasn't called Mother's Day and designed to generate revenue. I feel the same way about Father's Day.
