MAY 11, 1988 9-month sentence given - A 44-year-old Whitby woman has been sentenced to nine months in jail after ,being convicted of dangerous driving and driving while impaired. Patricia Danielson also had her licence suspended for three years. Danielson was convicted earlier this year after her car struck two Durham Regional Police officers who had been investigating a fatal accident on Hopkins St. in Febr.uary last year. Constable Chris Ostler suffered minor injuries while acting sergeant Joe Catoul suffered a fractured leg and torn ligaments. OPP special squads on roads Ontario Provincial Police, including the Whitby detache- ment, now have special squads looking for unsafe commercial vehicles as well as speeders on multi-lane highways as part of a new safe driving program. "Project 5," as the program is called, was begun after a five-per cent increase in the number of traffic accidents on Toronto-area highways in the first quarter of 1988, and a 10 per cent increase in accidents in 1987 over 1986. OPP say officers have received advanced training in the use of radar on multi -lane highways. In addition to enforcement, Project 5 includes a public awareness campaign. The Project 5 committee also has represen- tation from the Ministry of Transportation, Insurance Bur- eau of Canada, Canadian Automobile Association, trucking industry and other transport groups and police departments. Funds have again been pro- vided te reduce the Region's outstanding debt. The Region currently has a deficit that translates into $111.38 per house- hold in the region.
