PAGE 18, WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MAY 18, 1988 Strong earns. .medals in China despite infection By BRENDON BEINBOLDT Despite one ear infection and sore ankle, Lori 'Strong, Whitby's Olympic bopeful, returned from recent competition in China with a gold and bronze medals. ,Srn While in China, Srn suffered fromn an inner ear infection., Chinese physicians gave the gyrnnast needies in an attempt to cure the infection, but she eventually- went to the Canadiàn embassy in Chinaà to receive proper medication. With the infection cured, Strong went on to capture gold and bronze at the China Cup. Strong -also practised on Chinese equipment and floors which, in compaison to Canadian standards, are much harder.' She sustained light bruising in her right ankie due to the constant pounding on the floor* during her routines. She did not. participate in another international nieet in Beijing. Diagnosed as slight tendonitis, Strong is wearing a plastic cup to relieve the pressure on ber rigbt ankle. The inJury, altbougb. painful, is not serious and Strong will be able to compete at the, Canadian nationals which are to be held at Hamilton's Copps Coliseum this month. They say it takes a day to recuperate for every hour you are set back, due to jet lag and Lori was 14 hours behind our time in Canada," cornmentèd Strong's mother on ber daugbter's condition. She is a favorite to advance and become a member of the Olympicsquad, which will travel to Korea this summer to participate in the 1988 Summer Games. W&àrriors defeated' Etobicoke Eclipse 19-8 in Wvhitby last Friday then 10-9 on Sunday in Etebicoke for their two wins. Their only loss came te St. Catherines 11-7, but according rte coach Bill Eyre, that was one of the best games the team bas played te date. "We were down 6-1 after five minutes and came back. It wasn't a bad gaxne," said. Eyre. Eyre says the teaxn is working well together both on and off the floor.. Whitby started slowly but later exploded to take over the contest. In the first of two garnes, Whitby tykes got by Ajax 11-10, with Ken Galway striking out eight Ajax batters. Lee Morrison was *a standout at third base while Rajiv Gandi and David Partlow combined to drive in seven runs for Whitby. In the second game, Galway had three bits and Josh Mi Ier belted a grand slam home run to pace Whitby over Ajax 13-9. Gandi was solid during his stint on the mQund and Jeremy Schott was splendid at shortstop. Whitby peewees almost dupli- cated the tyke doubleheader sweep but came up short.
