PAGE A8, WHMrY FREE PRESS, DUJRHAM MOVES, MAY 18,1988 Mueum displays 'Ladybi*rd' Contrary to popular belief, the 1912 Silver Ghost Rolls Royce nicknamed Ladybird by its owner Lady Eaton, of Eaton's depart- nient store fame, was not a one- of-a-kind car. "Up until the 1920's the Roils Royce had models designated the Silver Ghost," says the manager of the Canadian Automotive Museum in Oshawa, Jack Innes. The museum received the car as a donation in 1986, and while it is not the most unique car at the museum it is probably the most valuable, now worth more than $250,000. Innes says the Rolîs was buit in 1912 in Derby, England by' Roils Royce. The company usually built the chassis, while a body company, in this case Barkers of London, built the body. Lady Eaton gave the car the name Ladybird. She also had two other cars built that year, the Bluebird and Yellowbird. Innes says he is unsure of the whereabouts of the Bluebird but the Yellowbird is sitting in a scrapyard in Toronto. "But the Ladybird was her favorite," says Innes of the car which cost approximately $35,000 in 1912. He said it was unusual to own a covered carat the time because many people were afraid of them. "They were afraid of the glass and what would happen if the car ever rolled over. And, the only other covered cars at that time -were funeral coaches," says Innes. He says Lady Eaton would use the Rails when it rained while she would use a touring car - a convertible - when the weather was nice. The car bas a six-cylinder, 546-cu. in. engine which, to this day, stili runs. The engine was rebuilt a while ago, but ail original parts were used, says Innes. The car does not have a starter, requiring a crank start. But according to Innes, the cylinders were buiît so tight that they would hold the compression, and the car could be stârted with simply a roll or even with a key a day later. One of the memorabilia items Innes bas of the car's history is a picture of Lady Eaton stepping out of the Roils when she attended the grand opening of the Eatons' store at Yonge and College St. in 1930. In 1952, Lady Eaton gave the car to a musician named James Nelton who colected classie cars. Nelton lived in Connecticut. So, in 1952, Ladybird left Canada. The car went through two more owners,. both who iived in New York, before it was donated to a museum in Arizona. In 1972, the Craven Found- ation, found out about the car, bought it and brought it back to Canada. "They had somewhat of a museum then and they would take the car on tours," says Innes. 1912 SIVERGESTROLLSROVCF 'LAflYIRD'L Free Press photo ONEPRIC E O4 BEST* PRICE jSeoi.
