She was selected by the (Canadian) Coun- cil of the Netherlands from several Dutch Canadian children who had applied for the honor. Mary Jo, a student at Pringle Creek public school, said she was 'happy, surprised and excited" when she was told that she would be meeting the Queen of the Netherlands. MARY JO VAN DE STOUWE McDougall's work on di*splay, A retrospective exhibition of works by the late Clark Il McDougall, opens at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery on June 9. The exhibition comprises more than 100 paintings and drawings in the first major retrospective of ma McDougall's work. His landscapes and cityscapes are well-known to collecters in southwestern Ontario. Born in St. Thomas in 1921, ho left school at 16 to devote al bis time to painting. Ho produced many landscapes in watercolor of Elgin county. Changing te ofis in 1945, his style became freer and colorful. Particularly fascinating is McDougall's black enamel period started in the fifties, during, which ho drew the outlines of bis images with quick-drying black enamel and filled them with rich color, creating a unique stained glass effect. The exhibition which takes its name fromn a St. Thomas street scene, will travel te Halifax, Nova Scotia and Fredericton, New Brunswick. Visitors will be able to see the work of this important Canadian artist and to trace his development from a self-taught teenager to a mature painter who produced work of extraordinary power and brilliance. Organized by the London Regional Art Gallery, this project is supported by funding from the Canada Council, the Ontario Arts Foundation and sponsored by John Labatt Limited.
