WHITBY'FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, MAY 25, 1988, PAGE 19 Redmen win opener The Brooklin Redmen won their home opener and first game of the season in the major/senior lacrosse league beating Peterbor- ough Lakers 11-7 at Luther Vipond Arena last Wednesday night. Derek Keenan led the way for the Redmen scoring three goals and adding an assist. The Redmen broke a 3-3 tie after the first period with three goals in the second frame. The Redmen then jumped into a 10-6 lead in the third, on their way to an 11-7 victory. Other scorers for the Redmen included Kevin Van Sickle, who had two goals, Scott Boyd, Blaine Harrison, Bill Callan, Adam Kluwak, Andy Perroni and Keith Begley. The Redmen's next game is Saturday, May 28, at home against Brampton. Gane time is 8 p.m. In the junior loop, the Whitby Warriors won two more games to boost their season record to five wins and a loss. Last Wednesday, Warriors de- feated Brampton Excelsiors 9-6 then travelled to Burlington Fri- day night where they handed Bay Area Bengals a 10-6 loss. In the Wednesday game, Jason Richards had four goals for the Warriors while singles went to Bill Passfield, Adam Foote, Jeff McComb, Todd Wilson and Chris Ainsworth. McComb and Pass- field each added five assists. In Friday night's game, Rich- ards continued to be hot for the Warriors as he had two goals. Passfield scored three goals while McWhirter had four. Adam Foote scored the other Whitby goal. The Warriors' next game is tonight (Wednesday) against Bay Area in Burlington. Tsai sets DYSSAA record as Anderson places sixth overall Selena Tsai established a record in junior girls' javelin to help Anderson CVI place sixth overall among high school teams in Durham-York (DYSSAA) track and field competition last week at York University. Tsai had a throw of 37.52 metres. Keri Ferguson, Andy Brereton and Suzanne Perroni also had first-place finishes for Ande-son. From Henry Street High School, Kelly Caldwell and Bob Willetts had first-place finishes at DYSSAA. 'The kids all had good days," said Barb Dillon, one of the Anderson track and field coaches, about the school team. Anderson will send 14 students for individual competition as well as a relay team to the regional meet this weekend at York University. Henry will send 12 individual competitors. Anderson loses to Dunbarton in LOSSA final By BRENDON REINBOLDT Anderson CVI's rugby season came to a conclusion with a loss to a powerful Dunbarton squad in semi-final action of LOSSA rugby. "It was only the second time in 11 years that Anderson has not advanced from LOSSA," said Ron Pither, coach of the Anderson senior team. "Our seniors did very well this year. We played well enough to win the semi-final game but we couldn't score on any of our chances," stated Pither. Dunbarton went on to capture the LOSSA championship with a victory over Brock. "In the division we play in, it is an achievement to get out of LOSSA," said Pither of his team's failure to advance to DYSSAA. "We play five of Ontario's strongest teams within our own division." Although Anderson's regular season has come to an end, the team will act as host this week to a rugby tean from Toulouse, France. "Toulouse is the hotbed of rugby in France," says Pither. "They play exceptional rugby, and we expect very spirited matches between the two teams." The 30 students from College de Trebac arrived Tuesday. The teams will play two games, the first today (Wednesday) at 3 p.m., the second tomorrow at 4 p.m. All games will be played at Anderson Collegiate. Free Press photo Strong, McDonald one- two in national meet Lori Strong of Whitby won two gold medals and added a bronze to win the overall high perfor- mance national championship in women's gymnastics over the weekend in Hamilton. Cristina McDonald, also of Whitby, was second overall in high performance (senior) with a total of 75.90 points, behind Strong's 76.80. Larissa Lowing, a former Canadian junior champion who recently moved from Whitby to Pickering, won a gold, silver and bronze in individual competitions and was sixth overall. Strong scored 9.85 in the un- even bars and 9.65 in the beams, her gold medal performances. She added her bronze in the vault competition, ususally her best event, after stumbling on her first attempt. Strong withdrew from the floor finals after aggravating her ankle injury. She will now rest before resum- ing training for the Olympic trials. Lowing won the vault compe- tition with a score of 9.725, was second in floor and third in uneven bars. Lowing was coming back from a severe ankle injury. She had resumed competition at the recent meet in China. Whitby rollerskaters bring hom Five Whitby roller skaters won gold at the provincial champion- ships in Burlington May 14-15. Cina Schmidt-Hansen was first in sophomore freestyle and second in figures while Maryanne Schmidt-Hansen won gold in novice B figures. Shayne Bayford won both freshman freestyle and figures and was second in solo dance. Brother Cory Bayford won elementary freestyle and was second in the bronze solo dance competition. Amy Hepburn was first in bronze solo dance and fourth in figures. Stephen Pacholzuk won both elementary figures and dances and was fourth in freestyle. Other members of Wheelies Rollerskating Club had good results in the Ontario finals. Pia Schmidt-Hansen was second in novice A freestyle and fifth in figures. Heather Schuyler of Whitby was second in novice A figures and bronze solo dance and fourth in freestyle. Julie Girard of Whitby was second in primary freestyle and figures.
