MAY 25, 1988 Pro vincial program designed to promote 'healthy livingu' A thumbprint representing each child's individuality is the theme of a new provincial health program to promote self-esteemn in children. The program is one of 29 community projects announced recently by the Ministry of Health to promote healthy living. The projeets- will cost $1,123,500 over two years and will use everything from peer counselline to martial arts training, native culture and English-as-a-second-language classes to get people involved. "In its "Fm Thumbody" project, the Durham branch of the Canadian' Mental Health Association hopes to promote self-estpem in children and teach them skills to develop successful relationships. The CMHA has been working with the Durham Board of Education to introduce the program ta Grade 4 ch-ildren through a variety of classroom activities. Durham Centre MPP Allan Furlong announced the Durham program. Students will help plan the program and volunteers will help present it. The project will cost $30,000. Funding is for one year'. Funding for the project reflects a commitment the, govemnment made last August to spend $1 million a year on community projects promoting good health.
