She was born on July 25, 1926, in-Orillia, daughter of Roy- and Catherine (MacDonald) Nichol- son. she married John A. Harvie on August 27, 1949. A Whitby resident for 37 years, Mrs. Harvie was a teacher with the Durham Board of Education. She was a member of St. Andrews Presbyterian Church ï, and the Whitby and GM bridge clubs. She is survived by her husband, sons Allan and James and daughter Catherine de Waard. She was predeceased by her father. The funeral service was held from the W.C. Town.- Funeral Chapel on May 18, 1988, Lev. McClure conducting. Interment at St. Andrews-St. James cemetery. WANDA MARTIN Wanda Joan Martin of RR 2, Whitby died of cancer on Friday, May 20 at Toronto General Hospital. She was 47. She was born in Montreal on July 6, 1940, daughter of Walter and Ruth (Bertrand) MacDer- mott. She married Anthony (Tony) Martin on September 23, 1961. Mrs. Martin, a Whitby resident for the Iast 12 years, was co-owner of a Whitby retail hardware store. She was a member of Holy Faxnily Church. She is survived by her husband, son Jay and daughter Trina. Predeceased by her father. The funeral service was held from Holy Family Church on Monday, May 23, 1988, Father Stan Cwiertnia conducting. Inter- ment in Wihitby. Doug Hird to speak at VON meeting Doug Hird, president of the board of directors of the Alzheimer Association of Ontario, will be guest speaker at the annual meeting of the Victorian Order of Nurses, Durham Region branch, on Tuesday, June 7 at 6 p.m. at the EarI of Durham restaurant in Whitby. .Hird's topic will be 'Recent Research Discoveries in Alzheimer Disease.' Alzheimer disease is a degenerative brain disorder that causes loss of memory and serious mental deterioration. The disease is said to affect about 300YO000 middle-aged and older Canadians.' "Because no cause or cure for this devastating disorder is presently known, our only hope is to be found in research. Scientists are now applying the newest knowledge and research techniques to the study of the human brain. Some of the most important research in the world is being done right here in Ontario," says H-ird. Hird became involved with the Durham society several years ago after bis mother was placed in a nursing home as a resuit of Alzheimer Disease. An active volunteer, he served as the president of the Alzheimer Society of Durham Region for two years before becoming involved with the Ontario Association. When he is not travelling the province talldng about Alzheimer disease, Hird owns and operates his own human resources consulting firm fromn his Whitby resi dence.
