Young's grandfather Thomas Hall was president in 1915-1916, her father Les hall was president 1951-52, and son Gary Young was president in 1980-81. Audrey Young started to enter the fair when she was about 12 years old. At that time her family showed cattle, and she remembers leading the cattle from the farm to the fair grounds. Over the years Young has entered in just about every category and won prizes in most of them. In fact, in 1987 she won I AUýDREYYOUNG first prize for the best decorated cake that reflected the theme of the fair. As well, last year she took top prizes for her canned fruits and jaffis. Young's advice to people interested in showing at the fair is to "Have one specia] thing, and start off with it, try whatever you like to do best." Young goes on to say, "Start your preserving when the fruits are in season and do it as you go along, so that everything is ready for the fair." Young starts her preserving in the fail of the year and continues until fair tirne. She says over the years there have been many changes to the domnestic science section. The most important is that t.ah1psz -ra now covered offering more sanitary conditions. She says the classes have stayed much the same, but in past years baking entries seemn to be on the decline. Young feels this is likely because "baking is just getting more expensive and people are Iess inclined to enter.' "Orafts," she says, "have always been well represented as have the children's sections." "The fair has grown tremendously over the years. It used to be only one day and now it's grown to four," says Young. This year Young plans to concentrate on jams and canned fruits and floraculture. Young is also an expert and accomplished gardener.
