PA GE 26,.WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15, 18 WHAT A WAY TO END THE,'SRHI(OLEAR! DECOmRATED!! HENRY STREET HIGH SCHOOL received somerat1Iherbi=zar'edoecoratiol S i the last day of sehool last Friday. b Liz Aruta Alison Frost It was a week of celebration here at Denis O'Connor. Successes were witnessed at every corner with praises of glory. It began with a surprise assembly on the mornîng of June 6th. Mr. Fitzsimmons feit that it was fit- ting to announce the success of our senior boys soccer teain in front of the entire school. On Wednesday June lst our senior boys left for Sudbury to compete in the OFSAA tournament. Our boysplayed extremely welI on Thursday winning both their round robin gaines. The boys then advanced to the quarter-finals, again defeating their opponents. In semi-final action our boys beat the first ranked team White Oaks froin Oakville for a berth in the prestigious final gaine. It seemed our boys were destined for gold, until the last two minutes of regulation time when the boys froin St. Jerome tied the gaine up. Overtime stili did not see a winner, until five penalty shots were taken froin both sides. It's tough to decide a championship game in penalty kicks, but that's what ' had to bedone. In the end, our boys lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to the teain from Kitchener. Even though our boys brought home a silver medal, ail of us know that they deserved gold. We hope that they may repeat their year of success next year with one exception -a gold inedal! Congratulations boys! You'll get thein next year! Another surprise that made everyone who knew him proud, was a gold medal tbat Mario Skara won at the recent OFSAA track meet. Tbroughout the year Mario raked in the medals, sweeping the regionals, LOSSA and DYSSA in bis various events. ilo-metre hurdies proved to be his baby as he finished the best iii ail of Ontario. DO'C is proud of hinu and Mis successes. Mfter ail, for four years now, he bas been yearning for a gold in OFSAA -finaly, he'sgot it! The boys' success at soccer and Mario's success at track were only two of the higbligbts in our second annual athletic banquet. Various athletic awards were given for the most valuable players on eacb teain as selec- ted by the coach. The rnost rnotable were the maie and female athietes of the year. This year Paul Peschisolido won the maie athiete of the year for Mis leadership'in bringing the boys teain to OFSAA. It was aiso DO'C's way to show Mim that Mis achievement on the Canadian national teain had not gone unnoticed. Alongside bim stood Catherine Sowden wbo, after five years of dedication to sprots at DO'C finally received a token of our appreciation. Her participation in ail aspects of athletic life finaily payed off for ber. The nigbt was one of success and admiration to those who bave worked hard for DO'C, not only in atbletics, but to those wbotook the time to make the banquet a success as well. This year bas gone by so fast and it's hard to believe that it is aimost over. Exams are just around the corner and soon after is the sumnier vacation.
