The day will begin at 8 a. witb cbarnpionship and consola- tion gaines being played until 4 p.m. At 4 p.m. there will be a special lacrosse skills demon- stration, witb special guëst appearances. SAt 5. p.m. tbere will be a banquet for the teams as partof an awards and appreciation ceremony. Parents and friends are welcome. coaches, managers and executives are expected to participate in the tournarnent and award ceremTony. The bouse league season bas. been described as very suc cessful and the games competitive. Many cbildIren were- introduced to lacrosse tbrougb tbe minor league this year. IRather than pushed to perforin, ebidren were encouraged to have fun first and foremost. Ail bouse league sponsors bave been invited to the banquet to receive awards witb their teams. Free Press photo Evanshen overail tetrathion winner Jennifer Evansben of Brooklin won the overali novice girls cbampionship at tbe Central Ontario Regional Tethrathlon beld in Myrtie Station on the weekend. The event was hosted by the Durham Pony Club and involves two days of competition whicb includes sbooting at targets, swimming, running and riding.. Evanshen scored 940 points in sbooting, 715 in swimming, 1,348 in riding and 1,026 in running to win the overail cbampionship witb a total score of 4,029 points. lKatbeen Piehi, also from Brooklin and a member of the Durham Pony Club, was second in novice girls witb 4,020 points while Sarah Jamieson of Oshawa was third withÏ 3,980 points. Durham Pony Club members did not do as well in the junior division with Tanya Dervent of Brooklin, finishing seventh with 3,302 points. Tara Evanshen of Irooklin was eighth witb 3,3246 points while Vicki Robinson, also of Brooklin, was ninth with 3,172 points. Bobbi Lehmnan of Brooklin was seconàl în fne senior girls division with 4,077 points with Donna Brewer of Scarborough third with a total of 3,565 points. In the senior boys' division, Marc Sellito of Port Perry was fifth with 2,519 points. The Durbamn Pony Club will host the National Tetrathlon on Aug. 4 and 5 at Myrtie Station. Thirty international com- petitiors from England, Ireland and Scotland (by invitation) are expected to compete along with competitors from Canada. R edmen defeat Orangeville In major/senior lacrosse action Brooklin Rednien defeated Orangeville Northtnen 23-7 hast Friday. The first period saw. the Redmen take control of the gaine witb a 12-2 lead. Bill Callan, Gil Nieuwendyk and Doug Descbener eacb scored four goals for the Redmen. Deschener also had three assists, and Nieuwendyk had two. Keith Begey scored twice and had four assists, Blaine 1.-arrson had tbree goals wbile Kevin Van Sickle had two. Derek Keenan scored a single an 'd bad seven assists. Singles also went to Barry Breare, Scott McMichael and Eric Perroni. On Saturday, June 18, the Whitby Optimists hosted their third annual Homerun 'Derby at Iroquois Park. .Two hundred and twenty competitors began the sbowdown at 9 a.m. When the crack of basebalîs off bats finally stopped, a champion and runner-up had been declared in eacb of the T-hall, squirt, tyke and peewee divisions. Ail participants received a 1988 Optimist Homerun Derby crest while runner-up batters and pitchers- received trophies and batter gloves. The champion pitchers received new basebali gloves -and trorhies with the bats and trophies. In the T-bail division, Scott Beegan was the champion with Stepben Pigrain runner-up. In squirt, Ryan Croten was tbe champion slugger from bis pitcher Scott Sonley. Runner-up was Paul Heinricb. and bis pitcher Ryan McArthur. In the tyke division, the champions were Ryan Wash- brook, pitcher, and Brad Newport. Runners-up were David Cooper and batter Terry Arges. Daryl Wright and pitcher Scott Smith were the peewee champ- ions with Jonathan Vizzini and pitcher Paul Brooks runner-ups. Bantams win ninth in a row The Witby Optîmnist bantams continue to dominate in local league basebail, .winning three games last week to bring their record to nine wins and no losses. On June 6 Whitby travelled to Port Hope and defeated the borne team 11-0 on a two-hit complete garne shutout by Jamie Watters. Sinon Gosgnach was the hitting star witb five bits and. four runs s.ýored. Adam Taiticchio had three hits and scored two runs. Little Britain was the next victim at Whitby on June 8. Whitby won 12-5. Mike Baker pitched six strong innings for the win allowing only one earned run. Rob Sevelle and Gosnacb both had two bits each for Whitby. On June 15, Whitby won a hard-fought battie over Osbawa, 11-8. Gosnach earned the win with Jamie Watters recording the Baker ail contributed two bits, including a home run from Watters. Atoms tie Oshawa Whitby's atom rep soccer team managed a 1-1. tie with Oshawa's highly-rated Turul team in league play last week. Michael Magee scored on a fine effort to tie the game in the first haîf. Eric Vanacke-r made several saves in the Witby net, witb help from the defence led by captain Steven Deatb and the checking of Brad Kauffeldt. Whitby now has two ties and one defeat this season, their loss coming against Peterborougb last week 5- 1. Peewees edge Cobourg Afrer giving up fourruis- in a sbaky first inning, Whitby Legion peewees came roaring back to defeat Cobourg 7-6 in Brooklin last week and inaintain an undefeated record. Whitby left players on base in every inning until the sixth when five runs were pushed across te Whitby Warriors lost 9-6 to Mississauga Tomahawks in jun- ior A hacrosse on Wednesday night last week. Bill Passfield and Jason get the victory. Ian Andrew bad the key hit, a two-out double te drhive in the winning run. Tim Puddister recorded bis fourtb victery on the mound for Wihitby. The peewees bave won six games witbout a loss this season. Ricnards scored twice for the Warriors. Singles were scored by Adam Foote and Ricb Nyment. Slo-piteh win for Movieola Movieola Cafe defeated Caseys 16-4 in Witby Mixed Slo.Pitch League action lest week. Steve Cardwell pitcbed for Movieola, giving up only eight bits.
