I For some time now members of the Ashburn Centennial Community Centre board of directors have been preparing a huge community party in celebration of Canada Day, July 1. Vice chairman Moyra Dobson says "everything's all set to go, a lot of people have donated their time and services to help make this a huge success and many local businesses in Ashburn and Brooklin have generously donated goods and services as well." The festivities will be held in Ashburn Park .1d get started with a pancake breakfast at 8:30 a.m. Ice cream and soft drinks are planned later in the morning and residents are asked to pack a picnic basket and stay for lunch. Activities are planned for all age groups. Ladies will be showing their ankles in competition and there will be a prize for the most elegant. The gents are to prepare their funniest faces for the funny face contest. A highlight of the day will be the annual village photograph. This year Ashburn's resid~ents will be forming a human maple leaf and Ashburn's "one-man air force" will be flying past and taking aerial photos of the event. A prize will be awarded for the funniest limerick and entries are to be placed at the Ashburn General Store for judging on July 1. Clowns, jugglers and side shows will round out the day. Here's the schedule of events: 8:30am-10:30am, Pancake breakfast; 9:00am-10:00am, Wandering Entertainment; 9:30am-10:30am, Side Shows; 10:30am-11:45am, Children and Teen Races; 11:00am-1:30pm, Baby Photo Competition; 11:45am-12:45pm, Human leLeaf: "Oh CanadaYCake: urn Flv-bv: 12:15pm-12:3Opm, Limerick Competition; 12:15pm-1:15pm, Side Shows 12:30pm-2:00pm, Adult Races and Competitions; 2:00pm, Tug 'O War; Pied Piper Parade with Hats; Balloon Release Activities for Brooklin seniors By VERONICA COLANGELO One of the favorite activities for members of Brooklin's Seniors club is carpet bowling. President Jean Arksey says "It's a little like regular bowling, but you do it indoors ana you bowl on special carpeting." The special carpeting and equipment for the game. along with other games such as darts, were purchased last year with a grant from the Ontario government. Arksey says that the seniors regularly have tournaments and have even had Mayor Bob Attersley compete with them. Besides carpet bowling, the seniors enjoy a card game of euchre, and shuffleboard at their meetings as well. At the end of June, a special wrap-up barbecue is held before the group takes its summer break and then just before Christmas the club members enjoy a party complete with entertainment, good food and a sing-song. The group meets every other 'riday at the Brooklin Cemýiunity Centre at 7:45 p.m. during the spring and early summer. Starting Nov. 1, the meetings are held in the afternoon because, Arksey says, "we seniors prefer not to drive at night in bad weather." When asked if the club would like to be more active, Arksey replied, 'Well, most of the members in Brooklin have homes to look after and don't really have the time to devote to more activities at' the seniors club. What with the garcien and tamily and all, we are very busy." "Many of us are involved in church and other clubs and just don't have the time." The Brooklin Seniors Club is open to men and women 55 and over. Information can be obtained by contacting Arksey at 655-3259 or Ann Plaxton at 655-3289.
