PAGE 22, WHITBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29, 1988 Whitby juniors edge Oshawa for 11th win of season Whitby's junior baseball team, rebounding from a troubled 1987 season, won its 11th game of the 1988 season against only one loss with a 2-1 win over Oshawa last week. Manager Sam Dempster says his squâd is a good blend of rookies and veterans, and relies on strength up the middle. The team includes some of ·the league's top hitters and pitchers. Scott Burnett, who missed the first six games of the season due to suspension, started for Whitby against Oshawa, the top team in the Leaside junior league in Toronto. Oshawa plays a limited schedule in the Eastern Ontario Baseball Association league which has teams from as far east as Kingston and Belleville west to Newmarket. Whitby, despite occasional player shortages and involvement in two incidents, had a good season in 1987 as one of the best teams in the league. The Whitby season ended with a 2-1 playoff game loss to Orillia, a game that concluded with a brawl - one of the two incidents. Burnett and Rob LytIe of Whitby were handed six-game suspensions after giving their version of the incident. Orillia coaches never attended league meetings to give their version, according to Rod Fillier of Ajax, EOBA league commissioner and presi dent. However, Orillia's coach was suspended. Whitby is the only team in the 12-team EOBA, apart from the Oshawa junior team which plays occasionally, which has opted to be designated with an "A" ranking. That means Whitby will have no local league playoff games when they begin in August, as Oshawa will be in Metro playoffs. Whitby will later play in the next round 6f playoffs. All other teams in the EOBA are of B and C or juvenile classification. Oshawa, Kingston and Markham have juvenile teams, all having little success but, as Fillier points out, laying the groundwork for future junior team s. Junior is age 17 to 21 while juvenile is 17 and 18. Whitby will be taking part, as an A team, in the Ontario Baseball Association elimination tournament to begin this Friday, July 1 in St. Catharines. Twenty -five teams from around Ontario will take part, with the winner advancing to national finals. Wayne Colley and the Redmen squad achieved a rarity of sorts, a lacrosse shutout, with a 9-0 win over Fergus last week. Then on Sunday, Redmen rolled to a 22-7 win over Sarnia. "That was excellent to get a shutout," said Derek Keenan, one of the Redmen's leading scorers and one of the top box lacrosse players in Canada, about the win DALE KERNOHAN of the Brooklin Red- men moves in alone on Sarnia goalie Bryon Leneve during second period action in Sunday afternoon's game in Broòklin. over Fergus Tuesday, June 21. Gil Nieuwendyk, another Kernohan didn't score on this opportunity but had three goals for the game, his last goal on an end-to-end dash while the Red- men were shorthanded.
