WHIBYFEE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29,1988, PAGE 3 Whitby youth band dep arts for Blristol musie festiva Muscinsfrom the Whitby Youth Concert Band will be touing England from today (Wednesday) to July 9. The band will be giving concerts in Bristol, Bournemouth and Canterbury as part of their participation in the second Bristol International Youth Music Festival. The Whitby Youth Concert Band was formed in September of 1986 to provide young niusicians from Whitby the opportunity to perform for and share music with other young Tfusicians across Canada and abroad. The band bas represented Whitby at local, provincial and national events. This will be the first time that the band attends a prestigious international event like the Bristol week of music. The band is a self-supporting, community-based organization. Many of the inembers are active in their own school music programs and all but one member, a Leslie McFarlane public school student, attend either Henry or Anderson high schools. Band menibers are 14 to 19, and rehearse once a week. They perforni locally between many fundraising activities organized by a parents' support group. They are directed by Bruce Court, a music teacher and, band director at O'Neill Collegiate, and will be accompanied overseas by four parent chaperons. The trip has been sponsored by the Optimist Club of Whitby, E.D.S., Royal Canadian Legion, Rotary Club of Whitby, Kiwanis Club of Wbitby, Kinsmen Club of Whitby, Buffett, Taylor and Associates, General Motors of Canada, Gray's Sports, Anne Cottrell Travel, Cullen Gardens and the band executive. Shrubs stolènl A inapie ree and three evergreen shrubs were stolen ftrm a Rosewood Ct. residence last night. Wendy Johnston reported that the tree had been cut down and the shrubs uprooted. One of the shrubs was found in the neighbor's pool. United Way goal announced The United Way campaign, "drematically reorgenized"' for 1988, will aim to raise $2,750,00, 9.7 per cent more than the $2.51 million raised last year. Campaign chairman Michael KCing announced the target last week, and said changes had been made ini an attempt to 'knock on a lot more doors" than in 1987 when the United Way failed to reach its goal of $2.6 million. This year there are 2,000 volunteers already recruited and trained, compered to about 1,500 volunteers last year. And instead of a vice chairman for each of Whitby, Oshawa and Newcastle, there will be only one vice chairman for the entire area. King said last year's goal may have been "a bit ambitious" at a time when the changeover at General Motors had a "very negative efi'ect." He said he also plans to reduce GM's ususally huge contribution to the overail total and "get more communty participation. 'We're trying to spread the base," King seid, referring to greater contributions fromn the individuel, employee and cor- porate areas. 'We hope for gains MICHAEL KING of 30 per cent in some sectors.' He noted. that one difficulty is getting donations from area residents who work in Metro and may contribute there. The six-week campagn begins Monday, Sept. 26 and is scheduled to end Friday, Nov. 4. Plans are to announce final figures on Monday, Nov. 28, at Elusions. The United Way supports more than 40 non-profit, social services agencies in Whitby, Oshawa and Newcastle.
