Melien swam the backstroke to begin the medley. She was part of the teain which finished third. She also finished fourth in her heat in the 200-metre backstroke with a time of 2.20.45 but eventually finished l9th overal and was eliminated from further competition. Judoist Glenni Beaucharnp won fis first two matches but lost to American Mike Swayne in his third round on Tuesday. He now advances to the repechage. Terry Paul, coxswain for the men's fours rowing team, advanced to the semi-finals. However the team was unable to nt' ance to the finals. A CR0 commentator said Paul ca]led a "perfect tactical race" as he led the Canadian team to a come-from-behind effort to edge past Spain in the last 550 metres of the 2,000-metre race in the opening round. Paul's team was third in the race for seventh to l2th-place finishers. Whitby's gymnasts Iiîelped the Whitby gymnast Lori Strong was eliminated from Olympic Games competition in last Wed- nesday's floor exercises with a fractured right ankie. She was hospitalized and the ankie was put into a cast. Strong became injured during the floor exercises, and her parents and the doctors attending in Seoul suspect that the injury resulted from a weakness in the ankie from an injury at a competition in China earlier this year. As a resuit of the injury, she was unable to compete in the vault event and placed 36th out of 36 competitors. Canadian women"s team to an overalillth place, finish. Individually, Lori Strong pla- ced 38th overail while Christina MacDonald placed 78th. 1 Bill and Gail Strong expected to see their daughter on Thursday last week. However, because of the security at the hospital, they were unable to see her immedi- ately following the accident. They were later in contact by tele- phone. Strong's grandparents and brothers in Whitby received the call from the Strongs early Thursday morning.
