OSHAWA, ONTARIO 728-1113 'E Rom antie f lowers make a garden of a bedroom- While styles for the street may be bright,'bold and jagged, the most suc- cessfùl fashions for the bedroom are decidedly soft and romantic. This the- ory holds true for the owners of the Counterpane Inn, nestled in the roll- ing huIs of Sussex County, New Jer- sey. They recently romanticized ail the bedrooms in their intimate bed and breakfast retreat, a favorite for refu- gees from the megapace and fast-track life of bigger cities such as Manhattan. True to form, the just plain pretty accommodations are already receiv- ing raves. And the chief camponent of. the ramantic mavement is the choice of wallcoverings. Most are delicate but exuberant floral patterns in clear, deep pastels, just as country flowers are in real life. More a trend than a decorating trick, the use of strong pattern on the walls miakes the roomi's elements ail work well togeth- er. That same romnantic style is an easy decorating approach ta use at haine. The wallcovering, called "Ribban Rose," combines a tea rose spray with twining ribbons, creating an overail ef- fect of vertical stripes. These Iend sta- ture to the roomn, as does the coordin- ating border, an oversized version of the same ribboned rose design, used at the ceiling line. Bath are from the new Wall-Tex4'Bed and Breakfast Inn Collection:' which shows other ro- mantic treatments from the same Inn. With walls of such personality, in- dividual furniture pieces are show- cased ta best advantage. Concentration here is on less clutter and more impact for each individual piece. A classic an- tique four-poster bed harmonizes with an old-fashioned vanity with triple- pane mirror. Simple gathering of a solid rose-colored vanity skirt is bath restrained and luxuriaus. As an added bonus, the skirt hides what needs to be stored away. The traditional vanity stool, often uncomiortable at best, is replaced with a fully upholstered slipper chair. It is newly covered in a crisp blue and white cotton seersucker. White eyelet curtains are allowed ta billow at the windows, adding another element of soft fullness. Although totally romantic, this bed- room avoids ail fussiness and bother. Each element, soft and welcoming as it is, serves a practical purpose. A case in point is the wallcovering, which looks as delicate as a nosegay and is actually easy-care vinyl. It is strip- pable for changeovers if wanted and easy ta instaîl since it is bath pretrim- nied and pre-pasted. Another practi- cal and oh-so-lovely touch ... the hand-stitched quilt at the bed's foot, just waiting ta, be used for curling up ta take a country-style catnap. t Yo(,.u may neyer have to say "'Clean up your room"l agaîn.
