Swish is owned by the Ambler family of Peterborough, and branches of the company are located in Kingston, Ottawa, Mississauga and Barrie. The Whitby location was opened after the closing of the Oshawa location 10 years ago. "Everyone needs the cleaning supplies that we offer," says Mike Ambler, manager of the Whitby operation. Ambler believes that the Hazardous Wastes Act has prompted industry to "clean up its act" and come to Swish Maintenance to get the supplies they need. Restaurants are big customers since 'You won't go back to a restaurant if it's dirty," Ambler said. Swish operates a cash and carry showroom offering cleaning, waste disposal and maintenance products. As a part of the Canadian Sanitation Group (CSG), a collective that pools the cost of updating and creating new cleaning chemicals and formulations, most of the cleaning chemicals and formulations sold by Swish are CSG products. The company is also an agent for Rubbermaid and Union Carbide products. Power washers that industry may need are available for sale, and Swish services all equipment it sells with a mobile repair service, if necessary. "We're the people that professional cleaners come to for advice," Ambler said. Swish is located at 1501 Hopkins St. By Debbie Luchuk Urgent Industrial Supplies, as the name suggests, supplies parts to Durham industries that need them quickly. The company, at 17-2001 Thickson Rd. S. in Whitby, specializes in speedy delivery of parts to repair, for example, a welding line vital to production of a metal product. Providing a variety of industrial parts such as bearings and industrial chains, Urgent's Peter Demeter says the company is a distributor of various brands of parts from the U.S., Canada, Japan, Germany and other countries. The company opened in 1987, and is currently expanding to meet the high demands of ever increasing numbers of industrial customers in the Durham Region. "It (industrial growth) has certainly been of benefit. Whitby is on the move," Demeter says. Besides supplying the rental needs of residential customers, Durham Equipment Rentals provides industrial equipment to local industry. Owner Mike Laurin said that Durham Equipment offers general factory tools, scissor lifts, tools for maintenance and other industrial equipment for rent to industrial and commercial cus- tomers. "Ve're the most complete rental house in the area for industrial, residential and commercial needs," Laurin says. The store opened in the spring of 1986, and due to the increase "The market is growing more competitive every day. In order for us to grow, we have to look at new ways to sell and maintain current and new clientele. "Another service we 'offer is MRO Systems contracting. Urgent assesses customer usage on all parts; crunches out a computer analysis and stocks accordingly for zero to four hour delivery," Demeter says. Urgent now has 43 systems contracts and the number. is growing as industries catch on the service. The company also specializes in overnight delivery from the U.S. Urgent Industrial Supply Inc. is located at the corner of Thickson, and Wentworth Sts. in the industrial park south of the 401. The company is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and after hours service is available. in business since then, Durham Equipment is moving to a new building this winter at 1020 Dundas St. E. "rve always had an affection for the area, and this has proven to be a strong area in commercial and residential rental business," Laurin says. He hopes to offer a wider product range with a large facility.
