Later Edwards also said he would favor a "place" for young people. Gomille, a high school English' teacher, who said she was con- sidering running in the federal election but was persuaded to instead try locally, said thequa- lity she had to offer was «'vision,"~ which she said was "iackinq in this area, and in this country.' She said that, as politician, she would not "receive and file," and would "stormi the barricades of apathy, arrogance, buck-passing, secrecy and short-sightedness." Brunelle, centre ward courcil- lor for six y ears, said there must be more Regon involvement in Whitby's traffic problems. He also urged that the polcie station in Whitby be open 24 hours a day, just one of the services that has to be extended as Whitby keeps growing. . But in concludting. he said that despite growth, "Whtby has a sense of identity and a small town look," and he urged partici- pation in town development rather than reïarding it as a "cs petator sport. Drumm, currently east ward councillor, described himself as one who "always makes a deci- sion, even if it displeases my neighbor." In bis opening state- ment, he wasted not time in blaming regional council of doing nothing in 15 years to find a site a new landfill site, but instead "licking Metro's boots» for 15 years. "I'll do what I always done on council - lIl say it like it," said Drumm. He later pointed out bis DURHAM REDUCTION' REUSE RECYCLING RECOVERY LEAF COMPOSTING PROJEOT To demonstrate that organic yard wastes can be recycled into a useful produot, the Region of Durham and the Town of Whitby request the householders in the designated parts of town to collect their leaves in these clear biodegradable plastic bags or rake them ta the curb orditch. Drurnm also said he supports Graywood's Durham Heights development at Rossland and Garden St. because it willpo vide 3,000 jobs and more shiop- ping area in Whitby. Edwards, the incumbent, who often recalls Whitby's past, began by mentioning bhis first election in 1959 to school board and then mentioned how little interest was shown in the battie between Oshawa and Whitby over the Region headquarters In response to a question about inlaw a partments , he said there is an obligation to provide sub- sidized housing suc as in the recently opened Durham Chris- tian Homes development on Glen Hill Dr. In his final statement, he said that he would like to see completion of improvements to Fairview Lodge and would favor a young people's facility, another icepad and another pool.
