MWTBY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1988, PAGE 15 Grnny fat. 'denied'.by'.Town' * Whitby council has turned down a granny flat application for a home on Palace St. Only councillor Marcel Brun- elle voted at last week's council meeting in favor of the application by Pauline Wiseman. The application is the second to corne'before the Town. Earlier this year adminstrative commit- tee held a public meeting on a flat proposed by John and Marie Buchanan in. east Whitby. No recommendation has yet been made on that application. Wiseman had applied to convert a portion of a garage to a dwelling unit. ,Council agreed with planning department recommendations that the granny fiat is a new concept in Whitby and needs further investigation before any are allowed. "More information is required to determine potential impacts of this type of housing on the community," stated a report fromn planning staff. But Brunelle disagreed. He no- ted that'the Province has already set up guidelines for granny flats - guidelines the Town could adopt. I can't.see any good reason for not approving this," said Brun- elle, also noting that the fiat would not contravene the official plan. "Every application deserves a fair shot," said Brunelle, who was blasted by councillor Joe Drumm for his comment. Drumm, a member of administrative committee, said the application was treated tairly and was turned down by 'com- mittee because of the planning department concerns. At theÎ administrative com- mittee meeting, both councillors Batten and Drumm recommen- ded denial of the application. "If we approved this, we'd have a whole lot of problems in this ,ýMunicipality," said Batten. "There's no question we'd be deluged," said Drumm. Wiseman wanted to convert Soid The Barn: OPEN SUNDAY Marlcham Rd. & Steeles Ave. 293-2279 part of a n existing garage into a dwelling unit or "coach house" to accommodate relatives.
