]Raglan fish hatchery first ~to piroduce pollutiion-free fitsh ByDebbie Luchuk A Raglan fish hatchery will be the first to produce virtually pollution-free fish for the seafood market and arctic char for Ontario consumption. With a unique filtering and recirculation system, the hatch- ery wifl be able to eliminate wastes and other pollutants from the water in which the fish are bred before being put on the market for consumption. The sewage colected will be used on a nearby tree farm as fertilizer. The usual method used by other fish farms consists. of a steady stream of untreated spring water, and resuits in great amounts of sewage that must be stored in settling tanks. Sur.h a system is very expensive and increases the possibility of f¶sh diseases being passed on to the ish. 'We're going into a research and development program to develop a 100 per cent vcirculatory system with zero --:nvironmentaI impact. There isn't anybody who can do that (provincially or in the country)," company president Norm Duke said. It will be a perfect fish, next best thing to perfeact, as far as eating goes. 'We're interested in trying to create a better environment, we're not happy with the way things are done (in other fish farms)." The fish farm will be the first to breed Arctic char in Ontario, and has been awarded permission to open a quarantine. An exclusive fishing club is also in the works, allowing fishermen to fish for triploid fish (sexless) adjacent to the farm. The research will be conducted with the assistance of a grant from the National Research Council, and work will be done by two biologists from the Rockland Hatchery in Winnipeg. Regdion comînittees to be decided FROM PAGE 18 care, welfare assistance, family benefits and job training. Edwards also wants to see the completion of the renovations to Fairview Lodge. Brunelle has indicated he would like to sit as a member of the public works cornmittee. "There are tremendous problems at the regional level. One of the major being the garbage problem. We (Whitby) need a strong voice there and I was elected to help the citizens of Whitby," said Brunelle on his choice of committee. The recirculation system, if it proves t6 be successful, wilI be of interest to Third World countries as a source of pollution-free, lower cost food, Duke said. and will put Canada at the forefront of aquaculture. Duke h as no experience in the fish business. However, he has the business experience to run the fish hatchery from a rthanufacturing business in Pic- kering. The hatchery opened last Friday, and will begin fuil-scale operation in May 1989 and is expected to produce 68,000 lilograms of fish annually. wJIM'BY FREE PRESS, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1988, PAGE 19 Russelil Travel LINDA JnaySpecials with Savings up to AL $600.00 per couple Cal ail 668-5000 59988 126 Brock Street, S., Whitby CHEVOLET* ODSMOILECADILLAC e CHEVY TRUCKS New Business In Town See Business News Section- CHEVROLET e OLDSMOBILE
