Corrugated ceardboard, dumping is banned .Durham Region is expandin g its recyçling initiative by ban- ning the dumping f old, corruga- ted cardboard at Durham Region landfill sites and transfer stations.' Works committee has aiso recommended the purchase of an additional recycling -truck at a cost of $85,000 to pick up cor- rugated cardboard in Ajax as part of a demonstration project. Art Leitch, director of- ope- rations, said the ban on dumping corrugated cardboard wfoul d be phased in but the pick-up of the cardboard in Ajax as part of the normal recycling pick-up would begin sometime in January. Heexplained that a special container would be provided at the Region's landfill sites and transfer stations for the card- board. It. will also be accepted at the recycling centre on Conlins Rd. Promoting the ban, purchasing the truck and operating the demonstration project wil I cost. the Region $177,000. Council is expected to gveits approval to the recommendation at its next meeting, Wednesday, Dec. 21. Study made of soft drink containers During the week of Dec. 59, the firmn of Deloitte, Haskins and Seils carried out a study of the mix of recycled soft drink containers te total recycled material fromn curbside recydling prograins in Pickering and Wbitby« This study involves actual collection of the container materials ini small sample areas by Deloitte, Haskins and Sella, using a Tilden rentai truck. These materials will be separated by type, weighed and brought te the Durham. Recycling. .Centre t;for processing. The newspaper wiil be picked up bythe regular recyching truck. This study is done under cotract te the Ministry of the Environment te provide data for the enforcement of Ontario's beverage container legislation. In Ottawa I have learned my around the buildings, attended a caucus meeting of new MPs fromn the goverrnment aide, and attended the introductory seminars for new members. Already there have been a number of constituent concerns attended to, including problems relating to immigration, passports and uneniployment insurance. I was sworn in on Tuesday, Dec. 6, The week ahead, of course, will deal with the recail of Parliament, the election of the new Speaker, the abreviated speech from the throne and the commencement of the free trade debate. Meanwhile, in the constituency, I made my first speech as a member of Parliament, to the Rotary Club of Ajax on Nov. 24. It was a pleasure for me to participate in the Durham Region Manufacturers Association annual meeting at the Oshawa Golf Club. It was also a pleasure te see se many of you at the swearing in ceremony and reception for the Pickering Town Council as well as the reception for the council of the Town of Aax.
