Residents battled Canada Post Ashburn residents provedf they could hold their own in a fight, espeially when it was against Canada Post. In January, Ashburn residents won the right to have their mail sorted in Ashburn rather than Brooklin. But that was only the begi' nning of their battle., 'Me post office had new owners in 1988, Barb and Paul Allen, and Ashburn residents were un- sure what effect the new owner- ship would have on the post office in the community. The post office at the store had been run b y former postmaster Moyra Griffin, who resigned late in 1987. As a postmaster, Griffin was paid by Canada Post. The Allens, however, had entered into an agreement with Canada Post to provide mail service. Residents feared the contract did not pay the Allens enough and would force them to close the post office. Resdents were also informed Canada Post might instaîl locked mailboxes at the Ashburn post office to replace mail being handed over t he counter. A meeting was held March 2 between Canada Post and Ash- burn residents. Canada Post decided against the locked boxes, agreed to hold further discussion with Allens about their contract and even agreed to replace a Brooklin/' Ashburn postal stamp with an Ashburn postal stamp. Kinsmen held winter carnival A. wrnter carnival launched in Brooklin in 1988 was a success for the organizers, the Kinsmen Club although somie of the fea- tured events including three dog sled teams were not advertised.
