Hopeton Édwards was brought to Canada by Whitby's Anna Bryan, with the assistance of the Herbie Fund (fund .to assist chil- dren to specialized treatment). Edwards had a lesion covering his left eye, and his chin, nose, mouth and left shoulder were warped. While in Canada, Edwards was entertained by several organizations and schools, and received several presents. However, 10 da sof testinq at Toronto's Sick ids hospital revealed that Hopeton could not be helped by surgery, except minor cosmetic surgery that was deemed too painful. A trust fund was set up with the help of a Toronto lawyer at . bank in Toronto, an0d local Jamaican groups, schools and others raised money through fundraising ventures to put Hopeton in a private school rather than a hospital. A total of $20,000 was raised and Bryan returned with Edwards on April 21. Free Pres photo '88 REVIEW '88 REVIEW New substation for Whitby Hydro By Debbie Luchuk Hooking up several new custo- mers and the establishment of a new substation were among the highlightsof1988 for the Whitby Hydro Electric Commission. Wve hooked up over 1,000 new customers last year, and we opened a new substation (on Hwy 12) near the (Groveside) cemetery to provide more north end service at over $600,000," chairman Gerry Cox said. A new line was begun in 1988 from the 401 to Rossland along Thickson Rd. to provide more power to that area. As well, Cox said it was significant that the hydroelectric commission pro- vided power to the new GO train station. For 1989, Ontario Hydro has increased the cost of electricity by 5.1 per cent, but "only 4.51 per cent will be passed on to Whitby customers, Cox said. "We anticipate 1,000 new cus- tomers, and we're watching the development of Atlantic Packag- ing. It will increase our load by 15 r cent." Te commission is looking at new office facilities to accommo- date increased staff numbers in 1989. A substation at Taunton Rd. and Country Lane will be moved to Victoria St. to assist in provid- gin more power for the south end Cox said that the commission has a projected budget of $2.3 million for 1989, and with in- come from development, the amount may be $5 million.
