The program to C ase in the ban on smoking as ben in effect since late last year, says Gloria Tuck, assistant executive director, patient services. The decision is the culmination of a recommendation made to the hospital administration board by a committee consisting of bot2 smoking and non-smoking physi- cians and staff. In light of its role to serve the public s a health care facility, smokiný bas always been looked down upon at Whitby General, and cigarets have not been sold on the premises for quite somne time. Despite the ban, smoking rooms will be set up on the second and third floors of the hospital for patients who have a note from a doctor allowing them to smoke. Currently, smoking is allowed in a variety of areas including a section of the cafeteria, various lounges, and staff locker rooms. Board delays smoking policy j Personal servioe use to be defined Whitby council has approved the rezoning of a residential pro- perty at 500 Brock St. S. to permit office uses and three apartments.. But no definition bas yet been made of the type of offices to be permitted. Planning department had limi- ted the number of offices to two, and would not permit either to be an art studio, real estate office or travel agency. But Jack I.ow, who represen- ted the owner of the property, Mary Anne Goldhawk, asked that7the restriction be lifted. He noted that Region planning department, commenting on the rezoning application, approved retail and personal service uses in the bouse. «We are seeking relief from the wording. The Region has allowed personal service uses and we expect the Wbitby planning department to recommend the sanie,"31 said Low. He also noted that the Town's Brock St. S. Corridor Study approved by both Whitby and Region council last year, also permits personal service uses. Council agreed, and removed the planning department's re- strictions. But Whitby planning director Bob Short told council he would have te report on the definition and scope of a personal service use. Councillor Marcel Brunelle also asked why Goldhawk had not been required te contribute money for storm sewers and im- provements te Ontario St. Public works director Dick Kuwahara replied that recon- struction of Ontario St. has already been included in work for 1989. Brunelle suggested that coun- cil reconsider a request for a contribution. Councillor Joe Drumm noted that Goldhawk bad been required to contribute $4,000 towards the cost of a sidewalk. T'he property, at the southwest corner of Brock St. S. and Ontario, was one of the reasons for the decision to study the Brock St. corridor. Council was first approacbed in 1987 by the former owner of the propert, Sam Princiotto, who applied for a rezoning. Residents of the area opposed the rezoning and in July, 1987 after public meetings, council ordered a study on Brock St. S. The study was completed last year. In the meantime, the bouse was sold to Whitby developer Steve Wagner. He, in turn, sold it te, Whitby chiropracter Mary Anne Goldhawk. By Debbie Luchuk The Durham Board of Educa- tion has delayed its goal of smoke-free board premises by Te boar:d rescinded a plc that would make ail board pro- perties smoke-free by this Sep- tember. Secondary scbool principals had expressed a concern that a ban on smoking on school pro- perty will cause problems for nearby home and business owners in the vicinity of the high schools. Designated outdoor smoking areas at high schools will con- tinue to be perniitted. However," the bor approved non-smoking in principle. The smoking policy at each high school will be circulated tbrough a consultative process including the input of the schoof student council. House purchase urged Rezional council has been aske<I to purchase a house on the east side of Garrard Rd. at a cost of $300,000. The house is situated in the p ath of the future extension of Manning Rd. to Adelaide St. The purchase was recommen- ded by the Region's works com- mittee which noted the owners were havin trouble selling the p roperty because bu yers h ave become aware that Manning is to, be extended. The property is wortb more than $3 00,000, according to the works department, but the owners bave offered it to either .the, ,.Town , of, Wbijtby,,,qr. . ,the Regfion for the cost of $300Y000. Rtegion works commissioner BillI Twelvetrees sugested the Region purchase the house and property because be feit Whitby would not buy it. - Oshawa councillor and works committee member Jim Potticary disagreed. He said Oshawa had extended Adelaide to the Osb- awa/Whitby border at no cost to theetgWi tby buy it,» he told committee. But the majority agreed with Twelvetrees.
