That's the message a group of Whitby residents want to get acosto Whitby council when they begin gathering names on a petition to keep a waterfront walkway as part of Coscan's waterfront development.p The group was the brainchild of Whitby resident Jennifer Leet. After holdin their inaugural meeting twyo weeks ago, the group, now called SOS, wiil be out April '7 and April 8 gathering names on a petition. Coscans proposai includes four 15-story condominium build- ings and townhouses. As part of -its approval of Coscan's design, council removed a public walkway between the condominiums. and Whitby's aror. Leet's group wants that walkway put back in development plans. "It's not too late to fight this. We have a good chance," said Leet. The group's steering committee held its first meeting last week, and according to Leet, the group also wants to reduce the density of the project. "There should be consideration for the density, maybe the building heights could be lowered," she said. Members of SOS will be in front of the major supermarkets this weekend, and then from there, Leet says the petitions will be available for signing in banks and the library, if possible. She is hoping for 10,000 signatures. ]Boat ropes'areeut in harbor Durham Regional Police are investigating after someone cut the ropes mooring the Prince EdwardIsl and boat at Whitby h1arbor.
