PAGE 20,.W r-BY-FREE-PESS.WDDESDAY, MAY 10. 1089, Concerns over Parking' The parking plan for a pro- p osed condo/retail building at Dundas St. E. land Pine St. evoked the most concern by nearby residents at a recent pub- lic meeting to hear the applica- tion. The application by Peregrin D1î«rham Ltd. consists of a three-' story tructure at the north end Of t1e property along Pine St. which would elevate to six stories at the Dundas St. E. elevation. There would be 7,600 sq. ft of retail floor space on the ground floor, and 46 condominium apart- ment dwelling units above. There would be 31 surface parking spaces for the commer- cial o perations and 73 under- ground parking spaces for condo dwellers. Access to parking is planned from Pine St., which drew criti- cism from residents. Murray Miskin, a Pine St. resident, said the planned park- ing entrance would resul in changes to what is a "quiet street, an old, established neigh- borhood. "It's not reasonable to make this drastic change to the neigh- borhood,» said Miskin. "Parking is the key to the whole thing," he said, suggesting that the parking- entrance be placed instead on the west side of the proposed structure. "It will redVce the building frontage, but it will relieve Pine st "'he gaid. <-'I don't want to stop the deve- lomnbut I want t he parking Another te~arby resident, Ed Grant, said customers of the retail operation in the building would park on Pine, rather than in the parking area, particularly if there is a convenience store. Like Miskin, he said the design of the proposed building was attractive, but the plan as approved, would "destroy" â~ne St. Pat McCloskey of BR2, Whitby sugested that the retail portion of the plIan be removed and that ail parking be put underground. But Grant said he recognized the feasibility of having retail and said condo residents shoulci be able to use Pine for parking access but retail customers should use a Dundas St. E. entrance. Discussion was also held on the effect of a road widening on Pine St. on which some homes are Suite close to the street. "It s tight, but it can be done," said planning director Bob Short, noting a similar widening of a narrow street ir' Port Mitby.
