The following year 1982, the doors opened ogain in May to the trailer and moved to the newly custructed permanent building for its officiai. opening - June 29, 1982.. That year 15,779 visitors were received at the centre. The foiiowing year visitation increased to 19,382 and bas kept this upswing pace. In 1988, more than 27,000 people visited the centre. WH[ITBY TOUBISI' INFORMATION CENTRE Since the doors first opened, the Tourist Information Centre bas served as a 'VelcomeII mat to many tourists from ail parts of the world and froin ail walks of life. These travellers come from as for away as Japon, Australia, Saudi Arabia and Africa. The Centre welcomes gueste from the United States and from the Canadian provinces, as well as residents ana newcomers to Whitby. Traveilers are invited to sign the guest book and in 1988 approximateiy 1,200 visitors signed their naone and address. 0f that total, 55 per cent of visitors were from Canada and 39 per cent from Ontario. Twenty-five per cent of this total represented guests from the United States and more thon 15 per cent represented people from Europe. The inquiries received are very diverse ini nature. Windsor, Wasaga Beach, and Toronto. As well, the centre bas a stock of souvenirs for sale which includes Whitby pins, bats, pennants, pens, mugs, etc. There is also a variety of local maps for sale. During the faîl and winter months, many inquiries are received concerning special seasonal events, local fairs, nature trails, ski areas, Christmnas and March break events, Christmas tree farms, skating rinks, and much, much more. Requests are also very "business" oriented and may include directions to specific industries, nrofessional offices (j and commercial businesses, as well as motels, restaurants and local stores. The tourist information centre is a division of the marketing and economic devlopment department of the town of Whitby. In February, Denise Young becarme the new tourism clerk. The Tourist Association of Durhamn Region (TADR), of which the Town of Whitby is a member, hosted a 'Marketplace' in the Pickering Town Centre in April. Various tourist attractions and facilities displayed their literature and the tourist information centre participated. The centre is located at 900 Brock St. S., -at the corner of Burns St., in Rotary Centennial Park and is open seven days a week.
