Decision on dump todarèy By Mike Johnston Durham regional council is expected today (Wednesday) Vo approve a dump in north Picker ing despite the protesta of more than 1,500 people--who attended a public meeting on the proposaI in Pickering last week. >Many of those attending, the meeting were from the Wihitevale area where the proposed dump would be located. Residents jeered Region speak- ers, -especially regionai chairman Gar erremýa, as they outlined reasons for the dum<1 site to be used by Durham and Metropoli- tan Toronto from 1992 Vo 1996. '"This was offered because it is clleap and close to Metro," said Lloyd Thomas president of the Whitevale resiâents' association. Thomas said Herrema and Region works committee chair- man John Aker were acting like stand-up comedians. Aker asked that the crowd wave the paper seagulls some had brought Vo the meeting, and he proclaimed a number of times how much he liked the crowd. By Debbie Luchuk The Durham Region Roman Catholic Separate School Board rescinded its recent controversial motion banning ta pe recording devices from pubij meetings Monday night,b ut not without some very heated discussion. The motion bas been replaced with one stating that the public anor es can use a mechanical a orelectronie recording device prior. to the mneeting, with the permission of the chairman. However, tape recordera and other recording devices are ban- ned from the balance of the meeting. Oshawa trustee Fred Jones led the chaotic discussion on the new motion, and was interrupted several times.
