After being sent to prison, Simard volunteered to become an informant and testify against bis former boss Cotroni. In exehange for. tbis, bie is to be released sometime around 1990 and receive a new name, face, job and identity - a new life. Originally from Ottawa Beam- ish studied radio and television at Ryerson. He worked. for the CBC in Ottawa for three and a baîf years before coming to the Toronto area in* 1986, and bas worked as. a freelance camera- man ever since. New to a role as producer, this will be Beamisb's first program Beamisb broadcast on television. His past credentials include a commercial for Toronto rock radio station Q107 and various projects for corporations., 'Broken Honour' is a collabo- ration witb old Ryerson friend Bill Foad under the name of Silhouette Productions. 'Broken Honour' istbe roduct of almost one year's work. Jug- gling tbis project with otber com- mitments, it was part of a long, complicated process. A camera was taken to Simard's celI (bie bas been placed in solitary confinement apart from other prisoners since agree- ing to testify against Cotroni for bis own protection); Simard was interviewed in secret locations; interviews were beld witb police and lawyers for and against Simard;' and recreated- were Simard's first and last murders. There was somie trouble get- ting the project launcbed. Many of tbe bigger networks were in- trigued by Beamish's proposais, but backed.off due to bis limited past experience in production. CHCH, bowever, proved to be an exception to the rule, and were extremely receptive, signing a deal for it almost immediately. Beamisb hopes tbe show doesn't reflect bis or Foad's opinion on Simard or sway public opinion to one side or another. Instead bie bopes viewers will judge for tbemselves. Beamisb also bopes that tbe venture will enab le himi to approach otber networks in the future witb new ideas, or per- baps even spur on networks to contact him. Currently, witb this project bebind him, Beamish continues to freelance and do corporate work. H-e is working on a piece about tbe 'Jumbotron,' tbe world's largest television monitor produced by Sony. Foad also is working on other projects. However, botb partners b ve more ideas in mind to consider, and would gladly work togetber again. 'Treasures' begins at CANDIDATE Rend John Jim D'Arcy Val Soctens Roberts Wiseman Cain Haché P.C. Lib.
