Fe rs ht Inuit art at gallery The exhibitions 'Inuit Art: Sculpture, Prints and Wallhang- engs and 'John Reeves: Inuit Art World' will be held at The Station Gallery from June 3 until July 2. 'Inuit Art' represents the work of artists from Lake Harbour, Cape Dorset, Pangnirtung and Frobisher Bay on Baffin Island; from Sanikiluaq, a group of small islands in Hudson Bay; from Baker Lake, Spence Bay, Pelly Bay and Coral Harbour in the central Arctic and from Port Harrison, Povungnituk, George River and Belchier Islands in Arctic Quebec. The selection of sculpture in- cludes ivory, antier, wh alebone and soapstone in various colors. Subjects include musk ox, wal- ruses, hunters, spirit pieces and many birds and animals. The exhibition is orgaýnized by The Station Gallery in coop- eration with Tuttavik, a division of La Federation Des Coop ra- tives du Nouveau-Quebec, Mon- treal and Arctic Cooperatives Ltd., Winnipeg as a fundraising proiect. John Reeves has been involved in numerous exhibitions and publications since completing his photographic studies at the Ontario College of Art in 1961. His photostories have appeared in 'Saturday Night,' 'The Star weekly,' 'Toronto Life' and 'Maclean's.' Reeves, a Toronto resident, travelled to the Arctic in 1968 and again in 1971 to photograph Inuit artists, and his work from those trips is shown in 'Inuit Art SEE PAGE il By Tamara K. And now every Monday at 9:30 pm., about 14 couples from the D urham Region area get together at the Ajax community centre to dance the night away.» «We're an amateur group, says Pam Richards, an active ba'llroom dancer,, exlplaining that the club gives people the chance to practise different types of baIl- room dancing.. Ail dancers in the club are amateur, otherwise they must pass special dance exams to com- pete as professionals.. There are two kinds of baIl- room dancing, one known as 'Latin' and the other 'inter- national,' or 'modern' as it is soirnetimes called. International ballroom dancing includes the fox trot, tango, quick stet> and the slow waltz. Latin -ballroom dancing in- cludes* the cha cha,, rumba,, samba and thejive. Many people stili practi se' these dances %ut may not kniow of any clubs or prograins in which they can get involved.' Occasionally the Let's Dance, Club holds performances^ for senior citizens. There are no dance instructors. Monday nights are "strictly, prac-, tice," says Dolores Mueller, an international ballroom dancer, who says ballroom dancing is a «competitive dance." Most Let's Dance members have competed previously, and take dance classes on the side. Special exams can also be taken t'O qualify as instructors. Other than practices, "We get tozether and have barbecues and thr'ngs,» says Richards.
