"This makes them paranoid. They don't know who ta trust," said Westbraok. The "street sweep" netted, mare than $54,000 in drugs and led to charges against 28 people in the Oshawa, Whitby and Ajax area. Eight undercover offlicers from bath forces spent six weeks mak- ing drug purchases in and araund four locations in Oshawa and Whitby. One of those was The Royale at 171 Brock St. N. in Whitby. The other three were the Col onial restaurant at 10 Bond St. W. in Oshawa, Genosha Hotel at 70 King St. E. in Oshawa, and Corky's restaurant at 799 Park Rd. S. in Oshawa. Police were able to purchase 10.5 granis of cocaine, 50 grams of hash ail, nine grains of liash- ish, 145 units of LSD and one- quarter ounce of marijuana. Police also seized a quarter- pound of cocaine valued at more than $50,000. "That is a lot of purchases. It just shows the amount of drugs on the street,» said Kingston RCMP staff sergeant RayThibo- deau. He said that as Durham increases in size it is logical ta assume that the amount of drugs will also increase. "Cocaine has risen dramnati- cally but ail drugs are on the increase," he said. Westbrook said- the investiga- tion was started as a result of complaints from residents about drug traficking. The complaints were made through Crimestoppers and local police departmnents, said West- book. While'Westbrook admitted the drugs purchased and seized were' not "a lot" he did indicate the sweep has "attacked the littie guy. It makes them afraid ta buy or- seli." He identified the people arres- ted in the sweep as "littie guys" The Central Lake Ontario' Conservation Authority will hold a public open house on Wednes- W a Jly19 3to9 p.m., at the mittee room 2. Discussion will be held on the who sell to students in schools. "These are the people that live on the streets and choose ta, make their living this way," said Westbrook. *Police have arrested 13 of the 28 people charged, with warrants outstanding for the remfaining 15. -Those arrested include: Michael Clarkson, 24, Whitby, one charge of trafflckinu cocaine; 'Outdoor Recreation and Feasibilitv Studv.'
