f WMMTY FREEPRESS, WEDNESDAY, JULY 19#,1989, PAGE 23 Avoid strenuous, exercise wheu it's hot -By Uisa A. Wilson-Paul Exercise Psyehologist Worm weather is the inspiration that moves a -much greater number of us ta, exercise. But exercise and the great outdoors are not always a great couple, not when the heat is on! As hunians, we are homeothermic, meani$g we- can tolerate only small vaiations in intemal temperature, + or - 1 '0 away from 37C. Consequently, we have temperature regulating mechanisms that help us maintain a fairly steady body temperature that respond when we are exposed ta hot or cold environmients. For exaniple, we shiver when we're getting cold to generate heat and we sweat to lose heat when we're hot. During exercise the workcing muscles generate heat as a Whitby Peacock Sports tykes continued their charge for first place recently with tbree victories. They began their latest win strea against Cobourg in what is becoming normal for tbem, coming from bebind. Jamie Turner led the advance by bis steady pitching but VWtby bats didn't get going. until the sixth inning with a score of 5-1. At this poit Terry Arges and Drryl ,enningsgot bits and scored home tà start things off. Then Wes Vickery let things up with a home mun ta edge the score ta 6-4. Ini the seventh inning Cobourg scored three more ras ta* try -ta break the Whitby spirit. But with one out, Lar Clay, Arges and Jennings rounded the bags to make it 9-8 with two out. Chris <oring,'fighting his way out of a battling slunip, smashed asiügle over second base.ý He then stale second and third. With two out- and two strikes on the next bitter and a -slow throw back ta the pitcher, -coach Rick Thorpe sent Going home in a normal result of their metabolic aetivity. The body then aets to maintain it's normal core temperature by increasing the blood circulation to the sin and activating a sweating response, when necessary, in order to dissipate this extra heat load. However, many factors can impede your thermoregulatory responsès making it very diffiqult for your body to lose heat. The temperature, the humidity, whether there is a breeze, your clothing, solar input, the duration of exposure and how hard you are exerting yourself are ail important factors influencing your degree of risk. The rate that the body can emnit heat is dependent upon the degree of difference in the, outside temperature and the body's surface. So, the harder you exercise and the hotter the dusty hair-raising slide -ta the plate ta tie the gaine. In extra inning, Jarnie Turner p ut down the first three Cobourg batters ta bring bis boysback ta the plate. KLevin Philip singled ta set up the winnng mn and Clay was the bero, htting Philip home for a 10-9 upset. .. I Peterborough, the whole team put it ail together in probably the, smoothest game of the year. Great fielding, hitting and pitcbing contributed ta 14-2 win for Whitby. Every member of the team bhit and scored and Goring recorded 10 strikeouts against the dazzled Peterborough teani. Port Hope came ta Whitby to face Peacocks boys who were stilI on a high from the day before and probably regret it. Jennings teamed up with Arges as pitchers ta keep the Port Hope team wbirling at the wind while Whitby bitters tuned in on the Port Hope pitchers. Clay, Jennings and Turner ail smashed home runs in the 30-5 romp. Blue Eyes blanked Goals by Michael Magee, Michael Robertson and Cliff Cop- polino gave Whitby Rogers Cale atoms (under-lO) a 3-0 victory over Scarborough Blue Eyes in league soccer July 12. Adami Farr had the shutout. Magee got the scoring under- way mwhen he followed up on a hard shot by Paul Lambert. Roberston then added to the lead when bis shot went off the Scar- borough goalie's hands. Lambert also figured in on the scoring of the third goal as he laid a pass to Coppoino whose E erfeet shot eluded the Scar- orough goalkeeper. .weather, the harder it is going to' be to prevent heat gain, -a condition called.hyperthermnia. Hyperthermia, or an'1 levated core temperature, can result in very serious consequences, if let to c ontinue it cari lead to a coma and eveli death. -Generally, the first sign of hyperthermia is muscle cran¶ping due to Iws of électrolytes 'from profusive sweating. This is easily treated b y fluid replacement. However, if left to progresas it can lead to heat eshaustion where' the cardiovascular system begins to fail, and then to heat. stroke where the cardiovascular. system. colla4pses. Hot weather can -be very dangerous! So, avoid strenuous exercise when it is very hot, especially if your not in good shape and not accimated to the heat. Exercising in the cooler times, early morning or evening in more advisable. Clothing should, be minimal, light-weight and loose-fitting and light in color.
