She had no idea that it was just a short period of time before she would get there. This year the 18- year-old' Denis O Connor high school stu. dent was one of two Durham 3tudents chosen to study abroad in a three-month exchange pro- ga. Sixty-seven students were chosen throughout Ontario. Hyatt applied in February 1988 and by June she knew she was accepted. "I was really excited, of course," said Hyatt. "I waited until I received word of when my partner was coming." Her p artner was Christelle Boil of Switzerland. She traveled to Canada first. "We had written to each other and although we'd neyer met, she picked me out right away. «When we met at the airport, she gave me three kisses on the cheeks. She was really friendly and very nice. We got along really well." Hyatt says Christelle's visit went well. The letters and the telephonie calis at Christmas, New Year's and Jenny's birthday helped speed up the four-and-a -half-month wait between exchanges. Soon Jenny was pre- arng for her three-month stay in Stzerland. Althou rh they were already niissing her, the Hy att famnily feit good about Jennystrip. "At first I had really mixed emotiions, but having met Chris- telle here first, and getting to know her made me more at ease,IY saicl Kathy Hyatt, Jenny's mother. . "While I missed her greatly, I feit comfortable that she was involved in a lifestyle I would be at ease with." Jenny left March 6. Her dreami became a reality. Sick from the plane trip, she was greeted by Christelle and her fainily who presented Hyatt with flowers and chocolates. After attending a huge recep- tion in honor of the exchange students, she went to what was to be hier home for the next three months.
