Town can't discdlow. school FIRQM PAGE 1 Two weeks ago, the board voted in favor of leasing space in a prestige industrial plaza in Whitby's industrial area for at least a year because of delays in the construction of M sgr. Pereyma Catholic Secondary School in Oshawa that affect Whitby students.. Students of the future Fr. Leo J. Austin Catholic Secondary School in the Coscan subdivision were to attend Pereyma until Leo J. Austin was complèteda. Those students will now attend school in the plaza on MeBwen Dr. The Town sent a letter to the board stating it did' not feel the site was appropriate, according to Town de puty planning director Paul R croit But h esaid a zoning technica- lity will allow the board to locate in the industrial area. lie explamnec that municipal, school board and h ydro uses are public uses. Public uses are allowed in any zone category. "The theory is that public uses are allowed anywhere because it is public,» said Rycroft. 'We wrote the board and told them we did not think it was an appropriate spot but they did not comply. «We are tied by our own zoning bylaw,» said Rycroft. The area is zoned prestige industrial. Rycroft said the only avenue open to the Town, for any modifi- cations it feels will be necessary is a renovations permit for which the board will haive to apply. He added that the Town understands the use is to be temýporary which bas "made it easier to take." The school board has leased the building for the balance of 1989 at a cost of $58,572. It will cost $117,144 for 1990.
