The Ajax/Pickering General Hospital will receive $3.4-million in capital funds for 20 psychiatrie beds and the. Oshawa General Hospital will receive funding for 15 additional psychiatrie beds. The ijew beds are part of a compréhensive mental health plan for the area which includes rebuilding WhiMtby Psychiatrie Hospital. Two years ago the niinistry à nnounced the creation of a mental health "network"' for the rough-ly two million people in the psychiatrie hospital's catchment area, which extends from East Metro to Haliburton. "This recent announcement is in keeping with the commitment the Mfinistry of Health bas to an integrated, co-ordinated mental health system which includes expanded community-based programs, expansions to psychiatrie units in general hospitals and rebuilding of Whitby Psychiatrie Hospital," says Ron Ballantyne, adniinistator Of Whitby Psychiatric Hospital "We continue to inove forward with this projeet which will make Whitby Psychiatrie Hospital a role model for the delivery of mental health services in the province." The redevelopment includes expansions to psychiatrie units in the area's general hospitals and new or expanded community-based mental health programns. for outpatients and former hospital patients. The community mental health network will be a regional resource to meet and support the health needs of residents, says Durham West MPP Norah Stoner. The 20 beds will be incorporated into the redevelopment plans of Ajax/ Pickering General Hospital. The minîstry is providing two-thirds of the capital cost of the project. The hospital is responsible for the remaining amount. The Durhamn District Health Council recommended that Ajax/ Pickering Hospital be awarded the 20 beds. In Oshawa, the 15 psychiatric beds will be in a unit adjacent to the hospital's eisting psychiatrie unit, according tô Durham Centre MPP Allan Furlong. The ministry is providing two-thirds of the capital funding for the projeet. People. who have belonged to the Newcomers Club for three or four years or who have simply have let their memberships lapse are offered an opportunity to reconneet with old friends. "We are planning meetings four times a year," says Patty Sinopoli,president of the Alumni Club and~ past president of the Newcomers Club. "There will be different sections that will meet one or two times a month for ladies' bridge, couple's bridge and ladies' luncheons. "We are also hoping to have tLoup'les socials," says Sinopoli.
