/3ý Region awaits -wat er report By Trudie Zavadovics "I've lived in Whitby for 30 years. I'm ashamed to cail this m4 home. It's lost its heart." Uat'swhat Margaret McKnigbt of Garden St., Whitby, had to say to Regfion works com- mittee members Aug. 29. McKnight bas hadl no water at ber home since Aug. 9, due to a problem with her well that she attributes to surrounding deve- lopment. "I've been a long-standing citi- zen and now when I ask for hep I don't get it," says the widow. I have lost the enjoyment of my borne. I can have no visitors. I have been denied this right. I need my famiiy now especially since the death of my Ihusband." McKnight now gets ail her water from her next door neigb- bor. This situation forces ber to do ber laundry elsewbere and to stay with relatives when tbe absence of water gets unbear- able. STests made by the Region. and by the Ministry of the Environ- ment have sbown that nearby development bas had no effect on the water supply at McKnigbt's home. McKnigbt maintains that the wrong well was tested an'd that the weil in question is the shai- lower of ber two wells. Whitby councillor Marcel Brunelle supported McKi'ight in ber efforts and asked t iat the situation be reviewed. "No doubt somethinghs hap- ened ta ber water. It s shame lor this ta bappen someone who lives in the middle of a com- munity with developnient hap- .pn egail around ber. I think w ca bep er with ber problem. "I thmnk we may have to look elsewhere ta help you," be said ta McKnight. "Ail the people around us are supplied witb water free of cost. Why should we pay for aur owvi wafer?, responded McKnigbt. 'T tbnk we sbould ask the Ministry of the Environment ta test the sballow well and table this until we get a report from the ministry," said works comi- mittee chairman John Aker, Oshawa councillor. Committee members agreed table the matter. I R~A1;TDC i IAqTl Iv. I Ia1%% FA -IGME -l 1 0OOO's of hE on design, di and renovî PLU a whohe ýI-w .:,lfi.hi't ecorating', rations...
