Ail Saints Anglican Church was designed by a noted Toronto architect, Henry Langley in 1865-66. 7he church has many memorials such as the Greenwood Window, designed in England in honour of Viscount Greenwood's parents, and a stone from Whitby Abbey in Yorkshire, England. The steeple, completed in 1870, is the only one reniaining in Whitby and serves as a surveyor's beacon. Both the Church andIts Parish Hall (demolished i 1980) were erected during a period of peak economic growth and prosperity in the town. LAST WINNER: Ryan OGILVIE-KING .~ g Whitby GRAND PRIZE DRAW of ail the entr ies submitted this summer will be at the Four Corners on Saturday Sept. l6th at 11:30 kewàl Brooklin Redmen will face an old, accustomed foe when they meet New Westminster for the Mann Cup, starting tonight (Wednesday). New Westminster in the west and Redmen in the east have dominated major/ senior lacrosse for much of the '80s. The series in New West will match up the two f inest box lacrosse teams in Canada. Both have a mix of veterans and young players, speed and toughness, top scorers and a solidi dual goaltending system. Both have fine management to ensure future success, management which pertorms excellent recruiting strategy to see that gaps are filied. When team leader and high scoring Gil Nieuwendyk retired fromn Redmen Iast year, that huge gap was f illed by Gary Gait. Derek Keenan's return midway through the season was another addition that may make this the strongest ever Redmen team. But word is that New Westminster is also fielding its strongest team ever. lt's bound to be a superb playoff. It may be a series that will go the full seven games, but we expect the Redmen talent will overcome the western representatives and their home crowd, as they did in 1987, to bring home yet another titie. ,..,.~ '.**'.,*~.......... ~ - U Dismayed by destruction To the editor. I read with interest your recent article on the north Anderson St. mess, 1, too, amn dismayed by the complete destruction of what was once one of the most pleasant streets in Whiùtby. I also happened to be at a planning ,omte meeting last year when Coscan promised to address ail of the Anderson St. residents' concerns about the effeet the development of their neighborhood. Despite the clear and definite promises at that meeting by Coscan to replant every tree, to replace every fence rail, and se, forth, there was one quiet Anderson St. resident who said sadly, 'We'll see about your promises." A year later, as anyone who simple drives along Anderson St. can see, Coscan's promises weren't kept and apparently aren't ever to be kept. The real concern, the real question in ail of this is: Who on our Town council is making sure the developers of Whitby stick to their word, stick to their agreements and do what they promise the people who live here? Prom what I've seen Mayor Bob's only concern is that developers keep their promise to continue the rape of Whitby's rural countryside. Thanks, Mayor Bob, for taking such good care of your town and its citizens. Stephan G. Lealy Brooklin Doggie washroom' To the editor. They corne early in the morning or in the eveming after supper or later. Who? The people who bring their dogs to the largest "doggie. washroom in Whitby." For those people who don't know what I arn talking about, it is the yard and playing field behind Henry Street H-igh School. Some corne in cars, some bring dogs on a leash and let them loose, and others just bring the dog walking loose on the streets. I ask, whatever happened to the "stoop and scoop bylaw"? How would you like ta be in a rugby scruxn and look down at the consequences, or, worse yet, be tackled on the football field. Let's give the yard back to the Ids. If you can drive that far you can drive a little farther, like to the country, to run your dlog. Sandra Lintner, Whitby Thanks for support To the editor. The Whitby office of the Canada Employment Centre for Students - Whitby closed August 25. The Oshawa office will reopen in 1990 to assist with any employer needs.
