WHITBY MRE PRESS, The Heritage Editioin,-SMEBR1,1~,PG S THE H E'RIT A>GE ED.IT.ION Ontarlo Bank building at Brockand Elm St. is reoeiving $75,OOO worth of renovations By Trudie Zavadovica' The unique brick building decorating the corner of Brock and Elm streets in Whitby, was built in 1867. It incorporates the solid, structure and intricate design-peculiar to bank buildings of thîat era, and was buit for a sum total of $6,000. Ron and Charles Schaaf, ownersof the'old Ontario Bank building, have spent the past six months and 75,000 restoring and renovating the structure. 'The buiilding (not designated as a Heritage building) was in a bad state of repair," says Ron. "Vie are restoring the ceiling centrepieoe and the fireplace. "The entranceways were altered, so we're going to bring them back to their natural posi- tions. That may inean filling in some windows. «We like older buildings,» he says. "We've p ta lot of effort into this.We 're cleaning the exterior and restoring the bricks. We hà ve p ut in a new front door, new windows on the main fleor the hallways have been'upgradecl and we've installed new commer- cial carpeting. "The main floor was totally guttedý to the floors joists. We put in a new sub floor and gutteà te the bricks on the walls. e've put in new drywall, electrical, plumbing, heating, air condition- ing, and relocated the bathroom." .When renovations are comple- ted, the Schaafs are planning to rent the first floor as retail -or office s pace, to convert the second floor to offices, and to keep the four apartments that are now in the building. "People want the oldness but not the inconvenience that old buildings bring," says Ron. "TIhere were a lot of unforsee- able things (durinV renovation), like the washinj cf the building and the demobition of the old bank vault." As Whitby archivist Brian Winter relates, the Ontario Bank began. in 1857 with its head office in Bowmanville. Chester Draper, a wealthy entrepreneur and owner of the Whitby harbor, built Whitby's Ontario Bank in what was described as the "composite order» cf architecture, the cor- pers decorated with cut stone Ilions and a cast iron balcony ~xtending over the main entrance. On the ground floor was the bank's counting room, the mana- ger's office and a fire-proof arched vault measuring 10 square feet with double iront doors. The vault was built on a solid feundation, a mound of earth for its base left for that purpose when the bank's foundation andE cellar were excavated. Duringt construction, this mound cf e=~ was surrounded by solid masenry Allt h e ground-floor winidows were provided, with cast-iron shutters which were raised and lowered b y a crank. The upper- floor windows had wooden shut- ters. All the gclazing was of the best English shieet glass. The second floor was divided into three rooms and the third floor contained four rooms inten- ded as a residence for the bank manager. A private door on the building's nbrth side provided access to the manager s apart- ment by means of a staircase. In the history cf the building, compiled by Winter, it is noted that the Ontario Bank was con- structed by Whitby contracter George Comack, who had the carpentr contract, and Dunkley an d Weeks, who were centractors for the brick and stene work. The stone fer the ornamental work on the building was imper- ted fromn Ohio and from George-, town, Ont. The bank's counters were made cf oak and surmounted by stained-glass screens. An inner door at the entrance cf the bank was lined with red baize. K.F. Lockhart was the mana- ger. cf the Whitby branch cf the Ontario Bank and was succeeded by Thomas Dow. Although it continued te, operate, lthe bank was hit hard by the depression cf the 1870s. In early 11890, the\Whitby branch cf the Ontario Bank was foroed te close, squeezed eut b its competition, the Dominion eank establ ished in 1871, and the Western Bank cf Canýada establ- ished across the street in 1882. In the, early 1880s, a telegraph and tick t agency was opened b y Edmun ci Stephenson on the second foor cf the Ontarie Bank buîldingb It is likely he meved this anyt the first floor when thebank closed. Stephýnson was a telegraph and express agent, sold life and ire in;rance, and acted as a travel ent, bccking passage for Whitby residents on various oceang1ingsteamers. He r9tired in 1913, ,and for maldnyars the Ontario Bank buligwas used as apart- ments.' In the 1890s, the third floor wa cc~ied as lodge recms by the Son f ngland, a fraternal. erganiz tien which w4i pro- minent ~n Whitby at that' time. The 0 tarie Bank building is a rare ex imple cf Cnfeieration- era bank architecture in Ontario and raïks with the strýuXcture occupied by the Chall t Res- t;aurant, as one cf Whitbfys finest dcwnte n buildings. As a matter cf interest, the Ontario Bank's head *office in Bowmanaville, an even finer examp o f this type cf architec- bure, a demolished around 1966.
