Last year, the four Whitby separate schools (St.Theresa, St. Paul, St. John the Evangelist, St Leo) had a total enrolment of 2,412 students. This year, with the addition of Fr. Leo J. Austin, and St. Bar- nards, enrolment is up to 2,935. Contracted teachers in the separate school board last year totaled 862 while this year there are 994. «As of September. enrolment for the region is 18,4-44," says Earl Lagroix, director of educa- tion for the Durham separate board' «A lot of students move in the summer and the fall-ofT rate is an analysis that is going on al the time. However,-we haven't been plagued by dropouts as. being one of our serxous pro- blems." Enrolinent in Whitby public schools was 5,581 last year. This year enrolment is up 10 per cent to 6.065 students. The public board has added 40 more portables this year, bring the total to. about 400. About 11,000 students are in portables. Between 10,000 and 11,000 separate school students 'are bused, compared. to 9.600 last year. 0f the 185 buses used daily, 39 transport Whitby' stu- dents. In'total the buses travel 9,581 kilometers per day. They are dispersed among the six Whitby separate schoors as follows: St.John the Evangelist, 800; St.Paul's, 694; St.Theresays, 615-, St. Bernard's. 413; rr. Lec Austin,'317; andSt. Leo's, 97. They have a total of 177 por- tables and relocatables, with 32 in Whitby. Total enrolment is -up 10 per cent from last year in Whitby public schools with the highest t-nrolment ePt West Lynde public school (684), and the lowest at R.A. Hutchison (170).
