Up-to-date progress reports are unavailable due to a local news blackout on negotiations. Durham College teachers voted 63.8 per cent in favor of a strike, compared to the province- wide average of 54 per cent. "The mood around here is upbeat," says Bill Swan, teaching master in the Durham journal- ism course and Whitby Free Press columnist. "We are operat- ing on the assumption there won't be a strike. The whole matter is out of the hands of anyone at the college. I have a belief in the sanity of all people. My guess it will be solved before we come to any great diffliculty." Two major issues on the nego.- tiating table are sick leave and job security. "Currently teachers get 20 sick days a year. That's pretty stan- dard," says Swan. "The current offer would create a two-tier sys- tem." Essentially, Swan says that new teachers would not get sick leave while teachers uncder the old contract would. Eventually, the evolution would leave tea- chers with no sick leave plan. The issue of job security is more vague, with the emphasis on maintaining job seniority in the event of school transfers due to course elimination. According to Swan, one of the concepts of Vision 2000, the col- lege's strategy forn the future, is the rationalization of courses. That could lead to the elimina- tion of certain courses. Salary and benefits are the other issues under negotiation. Even if a strike is averted, it could take a couple of days for the contract to be ratified and classes to resume.
