Rec complex area to be 'Civic Centre' The recreation complex to be built at the corner ofRossland Rd. and Brock St. N., the munici- 'pal building to the east and the future library will all be part of what will be called the Whitby Civic Centre. Whitby council on Monday accepted the name recommended by the rec complex project com- mittee of the Town parks .-and recreation department. "In the absence of any suitable alternative.g, I have to support it," comndted councillor Tom Edwards during th@ council ses- sion, who felt -"a people place" should be suggested in a name. "If you ask 100 people (for a sug.ested name), you'll get 100 opinions," said councillor Joe B'tigelii. Bldescribed civic centre as a ood concept"because the name identified the "centre of this com- munity.". unity.ect committee recom- mended the name because all buildings on the site would offer municipal services. "Therefore, each building on the site is part of the umbrella site designation of the Whitby Civic Centre and maintains its own individual identity by adding component names within the official designation," states the report. "For example, Civic Centre Recreation Complex, Civic Centre Library, Civic Centre Park, etc. "The recommendation for a site name strongly supports the ongoing development of the con- cept to create a 'Government Centre' along Rossland Corridor. "The Civic Centre site designa- tion will allow Whiyby its own identity while being in close pro- ximity with Regional buildings, Provincial buildings, etc." The name will permit staff to prepare advance advertisement, public relations material and promotional material, as well as an advance order for a custom- made sign. Strike is over By Trudie Zavadovics The strike is over but negotia- tions aren't. More than 9,000 college teachers return to work today and over 100,000 Ontario college students return to school after an imposed five-week absence. Minutes before Minister of Via passengers feel 'snubbed' SS page 5 Education Sean Conway was to legislate college teachers back to work, the Council of Regents and OPSEU informed him that they'd like to give negotiations another chance, this time with a different mediator. The new mediator is Martin Teplitsky. If negotiations break down again, Teplitsky will then arbitrate. If a contract settle- ment isn't reached by Nov. 30, then it will go to binding arbit- ration. • In the meantime faculty begin work today and students. follow suit tomorrow. Peter McKeracher, president of OPSEU Local 354, is surprised and confused at the outcome. "I'm looking forward to going back to work. I don't want to be on the picket line but I dont really know how I feel until I understand what's going on. For me, it's encouraging that we wern't legislated back to work SEE PAGE 25 In remembranoe Store owner: Our balloons aren't hazardous Celebrations To Go president Michael Gazo says balloon releases offered by his st "environmentally safe Io.' - -I ow - e ess ore are rations." celeb- In a letter to Campeau Cor- p'oration, which last week cance- ed a balloon release at the open- ing of the new Zellers store at the Oshawa Centre because of a complaint by a resident about the environmental hazard that might result, Gazo said his store uses balloons which are "totally biodegradable." The Durham Board of Educa- tion has also indicated it will ban balloon releases at board school events, after learning that land and sea birds and marine ani- mals ingest the residual latex from balloons that have fallen. "What we responded to wa: about animals ingesting the bal loons,'" says Whitby trustee Iai Brown, -vice-chairman of thi Durham Board of Education "We're also concerned about th general litter it causes." On Monday night, Whitb: councillor Dennis Fox alsi described helium balloons as "hazard" and suggested tha Town staff study the problem.
