The' municipalities of Ajex, Newcastle, Oshawa, Pickering, Scugog, Uxbridge and Whitby will be offering speciai prograis. during this week-Iong event., The concept was developed by the Alcohol Recovery Homes Association of Ontario, and the idea is rapidly spreading throughout the province. Its purpose is to increase public awareness abdut the nature and extent of addictions, by providing information on eisting resources for education, prevention, treatment and recovery. Displays, presentations, TV coverage, libraiy event with magicien and story-teller are some of the events planned. Over the next few months, volunteers from churches, industries, services clubs, social services and the medical profession will work towards consciousness raising of this serious problem. .-A speakers bureau is being set up and made available to aIl interested groups. November 19-26 is Marfan Syndrome Awareness Week. Marfan syndrome is a life-threatening disorder of the connective tissues cf the body. This ineans that the fibres and tissues that hold and support the body are weakened and stretched. The situation becomes life- threatening if the aorta (the main artery carrying blood out of the heert) stretches to the point cf rupture. Blindness- and dislocation of. the eye lens, collapsed lungs, curvature cf the spine, and painful dislocations cf the knees and other joints, are just some of the many problems that cen also result from this stretching cf connective tissue. Although Marfen syndrome affects several thousand Canadiens, it is very little known. As a resait, many people with Marfan know little about their disorder, and more seriously, meny people do not even know they have. it.
