Twenty-five from the Durliam Region wvere recognized for their impressive Contributions ta our community. Four new naines were added ta tlie coninuing list of YWCA Women of Achievement. Jeannine Butler, Robin Jones, Sandra Sweet and Tracey Welsh received special awards in tlie forin of silver pins custom-made by Oshawa goldsniith Sonya Sanders. Ami Medina, television journalist , and foreign correspondent, was tlie guest speaker for the dinner and commended al the nominees for their achievements. Medina encouraged wornen te persevere and work te ach.ieve one's goals. Over 350 e gathered to celebrate this YWCA evening of recognition Of women'ls achievements in Durham Region. Jeannine Butler was nominated by the Oshiawa & District Council for the Arts and was selected as YWCA Women of Distinction for the Arts. She je a leader ini conununitY theatre. For over 20 years she lias been active in theatre work as actor, director, producer, adjudicator of theatre guilds and festivals and coordinator of theatre education courses. Since coniing to Osliawa in 1971, Butler bas participated in every aspect 0ftlie threatre througliout Durham Region, iking lier with Bowmanville Drama Festival, Central Collegiate Drama Festival, Whitby rArts and tlieUnited Wa. As well, Jeannine hosted a daily NOTICE 0F ROUTE PLANNING AND ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMVENT STUDY HIGHWAY 407 FROM HIGHWAY 48 TO HIGHWAY 35/115 The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MO), has initiated a study to determine the location and right-of-way requirements for proposed Highway 407 tram Highway 48 in Markhamn easterly ta Highway 35/115 in the Town of Newcastle (approximately 60 km). As propased, Highway 407 wiil be an ultimate 10 lane freeway from Highway 48 easterly to the vicînity of Durham Road 34 (Caurtice Road), in the Town of Newcastle. The remaining section to Highway 35/115 will be planned as an 8 lane freeway. A transit right-of-way wil also be planned as part of the Highway 48 ta Durham Road 34 section. The initial phase of the study - DATA COLLECTION - is currently.underway. Information on ail engineering and environmental aspects of the study area will be collected and assessed ta facilitate the development and analysis of alternative routes. A series of Public Information Centres will be held during this study. The first is currently planned for the Spring of 1990, at which time the resuits of data côllection, and the preliminary alternative routes wiIl be presented for public review and comment. The full study area within which alternative routes will be developed includes portions of the Regional Municipalities of York and Durham and the County of Victoria and is.autlined below. This study is subject ta the full requirements of the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act. Approval will be requested to designate and proteot a corridor and ta purchase property for the f reeway and the transit rights-of-way and for design, construction and operation of the freeway in the future. Camments and information regarding this study are being collected ta assist MTO in meeting requiremnents of the Environmental Assessment Act. Information will be maintained as a public data base and will be kept on file for use during the study, and unless otherwise requested, may be included in study documentation which is made available for public review. Robin Jones was noniinated by Denise HouseSedna Shelter and Suppor Services, and selected as tlie CA Women of Distinction for Community Service. She lias been conimunity relations representative, McDonald's Faxnily Restaurants of Oshawa, since 1980. She is pesi dent of Denise House, a shelter for abused women, treasurer of tlie Tourist Association of Durliam Region, an executive member of the Osliawa Folk Arts Council and a founding member of the Durliam Industry Education Coundil, a council which brings together tlie Durliam Separate Scliool Board, the Durham Board of Education and conoerned businesses, for tlie purpose of improving the education of youth and to better prepare tliem for tlie business world. Jones is a member of the community relations and fundraising committee for the Osliawa & District Association of Cdonmunity Living arndairember of the Gift 0f Chtistmas, an organization tliat provides toys and food for those in need each Cliristmas. She is also cliief judge for yrouth education prograni, Roya Canadian Legion, OUshawa Branch 43. In the past, she lias been a volunteer, Metropolitan Toronto Association for Community Living, a volunteer teaching assistance, Bermondsey Scliool, an educational prograni for developmentally liandicapped teenagers. Her accomplisbments include being Parent of tlie Year (1989) Tam O'Slanter junior public school where lier son attends; local store marketing award, McDonald's Restaurants, 1985 and 1986, and Best Bet Award, McDonaldIs Restaurants of Canada Ltd. for tlie Teddy Bear's Picmic, presented as part of the Osliawa Fiesta Week. -Sandra Sweet, nominated by Simcoe Hall Settlement House Board, was selected as YWCA Women of Distinction for Wonxen in the Workplace. Sweet worked il years with Sfimcoe Hall Children's Centre as pre-school diagnostic group and day camp coordinator. In lier nine years work with Simcoe Hall Settlement House, she lias been responsible for tlie creative experiences for children. She has been coordinator for a successfu sole-support mother's prograin and women's resource centre program O(ife management). She lias been a facilitator for community interest worksliops in self esteem and assertiveness training for such agencies as the Durliami Housing Autliority and Denise House. Her volunteer activities include serving on a comniittee ta establish a toy lending ibraryfor special needs c ile, illustrating a series, ovr)- tenar worksheets for speech and language delayed chldren. Sweet is a member of the Outreacli board of directors and volunteer staff for "steetrofin," a program taght infcooansd conimunity centres in Ontario.
