Durham regional council passed the motion last Wednes- day as a response to Bill 187 which shifts the responsibility of court security from the Province to the municipalities. The change met with strong opposition from police forces, commissions and- councils, including Durham Xitby Mayor Bob Attersley, head of the police commission, told coundil that the extra offi- cers were necessary to ensure the security of the judges, of the court premises, of the people in custody and of persons who take part in court proceedings., "At present time we have 12 unarmed people who are used to escort prisoners, " said Attersley. "The reason for wanting'officers is to use them for other work. when court is not in session.» He said that the difference between hiri;ng civilians and offi- cers amounts to about $6,000. The cost to the Region in 1990 for the officers will be $550,000. - The officers will be hired in January and start training Feb 13, 1990. The Town has used a night patroller for the past few winters to issue parking violations in areas where car owners are ignoring "no parking" restric- tions and, the -maximum three- hour imit. The parked vehicles have crea- ted a hazardous situation by restricting emergency access.
