MONTGOMERY PLACE 213 ..a'.ýON ST. S. 668-5011 IINTERIOR DESIGNERS WELCOME HOW TO SEAL A CONCRETE FLOOR Dust from concrete floors in garages and basements is a common problem. Many of us have tried to solve the problemn by giving the floor a quick dlean up and then applying a quick coat of "floor paint" only to have the paint peel off like a sunburn a couple of months later. Sealing concrete can be easy. We recommend clear concrete seals as opposed to coloured seals. When a clear seal wears, you can always patch the spot, while wear on a coloured seal necessitates the reseaiing of the entire floor in order ta match the colour. For 'seaing basements, where heavy traf ic is unlikely, a water based seal such as Butcher's IRONSTONE is generally best. AIl that is required is a good scrub, using a heavy duty cleaner (SWISH JET), thorough rinsing with clear water, aîlowing the floor to thoroughly dry, and the application of 3 to 6 coats of IRONSTONE depending on the porosity of the floor and the level of gloss that is desired. For garages or heavier traffic floors, an oul modified seai (CGS CONCRETE & GYM SEAL> might be desirable. This is a little triokier. First any oil spilîs that may have penetrated the concrete must be removed. If they arent, the oil will work back up through the concrete and cause the seal to lift. Generally, a thorough scrubbing with an industrial degreaser (INDO 500) wiII work wonders. After scrubbing and rinsing, the floor must be aîlowed-to. dry for a minimum of 2 hours before applying the seal. Appîy the seal with a paint roller. Generally one coat wiII suffice. On a particularly porous fîoo(, wait 6 to 14 hours and apply a second coat. The results are a dust free wiet look floor which is impervious to most harsh chemicals. Public Works I PROPERTY ASSESSMENT AND SCHOOL TAXES Notice to Business Partnerships and to Publiciy Traded Corporations and their Subsidiaries Starting in 1990, the rules by which business partnerships and publicly traded corporations and their subsidia 'ries direct their school tax support will change. This will affect the way the property assess- ment base is allocated among Public, Separate and French-language School Boards. " Business partnerships will acquire the right to support a Separate School Board, or the French-language School Board in Ottawa- Canleton, up ta the proportion that the partnership is held by Separate School supporters or French-language School supporters. Until now, ail partilers had ta, be Roman Catholic or Francophone and agree ta do so. " The property assessment of publicly traded corporations and their subsidiaries wilI be shared between Public and Separate School Boards in the same area, and in Ottawa-Carleton by the Public, Separate and French-language School Boards, in proportion ta each board's residential and farm assessment. Until now, a corporation' s support for a Separate School Board, or the French-language School Board in Ottawa-Carleton, could not exceed the proportion of shares held by Roman Catholics or Francophones. In order ta implement this initiative, the Ministry of Revenue must amend its records ta identify those business partnerships that wish ta split their school tax support, and ta identify ahl publicly traded cor- porations and their subsidiaries. Information about the new school support rules will be sent ta you in the near future, along with a Notice of Property Valuation. Please review the new rules, and then check your Notice ta verify that the Ministry of Revenue has correctly identified your school support. If it's not right, please tell us. A reply form will be included with the Notice. Your cooperation will ensure the proper allocation of your school taxes to the School Boards in your area. ®Revenue Ontario I 1 1989, PAGE 13 à&*
